The job duties of an electric lineman apprentice involve training to service, repair, and install electric power lines. During this apprenticeship, you work under the supervision of a journeyman lineman or technician. You construct electrical power lines and climb up poles to repair or maintain existing electrical connections. As a lineman, you work outside in all weather conditions, and you are often on call to perform repairs during emergencies. In addition to learning to work safely around high voltage electrical equipment, you also learn safe climbing techniques. An apprenticeship program typically lasts three to four years and includes both hands-on job training and classroom instruction.
