Job description

All Election Workers (Poll Workers) Must (under Ga. Election Code 21-2-92):

  • Shall be judicious, intelligent, and upright citizens of the United States.
  • Be a resident of or otherwise employed by the county in which appointed or reside in an adjoining County (waiver must be signed by county of residence, if outside Rockdale County).
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Cannot be a public officer nor a candidate.
  • Cannot be the parent, spouse, child, brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in- law, brother-in-law, or sister-in-law of a candidate whose name is to appear on the ballot in such election.
  • Have the patience and the ability to deal courteously with the public and coworkers.
  • Have reliable transportation to the polling place and training classes.
  • Be able to stand for long periods, bend, and have manual/physical dexterity.
  • Attend and complete mandatory training before each election.
  • Remain impartial and nonpartisan while working at the polls.
  • Be dependable and committed to the voting process.

NOTE: Ga. Election Code Section 21-2-8 states that no person convicted of a felony shall serve as a poll officer unless his civil rights have been restored.

Below is a sample of the duties to be performed by the Elections Clerk (Poll Worker). Please read the requirements carefully and consider the responsibilities before applying. Note: This is a one-day assignment for each election in Rockdale County. Election Day is always on a Tuesday.

  • Assists with opening the polling place and determining voting room arrangement.
  • Assists with verifying the seal number on the ballot transfer bag.
  • Assists with preparing the touchscreen voting units and scanner for voting.
  • Assists the Precinct Manager in any capacity, which may include filling out and signing election-related forms.
  • Assists with checking in voters to vote.
  • Must be flexible and willing to work in any position required at the precinct.
  • Instruct voter on how to mark their ballot and insert voted ballots into the scanner.
  • Advises voters to review their ballot before casting.
  • Assists with maintaining election equipment security throughout the election period.
  • Assists with keeping the voting stations clean.
  • Stands outside the entrance of the precinct to direct voters into the voting room.
  • Assist manager in closing voting at 7 p.m. by placing self at end of the line and notifying voters who approach that polls are closed.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Ability to fluently speak, read, and write English.
  • Basic skills using a tablet or computer.
  • Must be willing to work 12-14 hours on Election Day.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills to interact and cooperate with co-workers and to deal effectively with voters, poll watchers, electioneers, and the general public.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow instructions given by the Precinct Managers.
  • The ability, with assistance, to lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 lbs., such as election equipment, ballots, supply boxes, etc.
  • Ability to recognize election issues and to promptly report any issues to the Precinct Manager as required.
