What are EE Controls?

EE Controls refers to Electrical and Electronic Controls, which are systems and devices used to manage, automate, and monitor electrical and electronic processes in various industries. Professionals working in EE Controls design, install, maintain, and troubleshoot control systems such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, actuators, and human-machine interfaces (HMIs). These systems are essential for optimizing operations, ensuring safety, and increasing efficiency in manufacturing, energy, and other sectors.

What are some common challenges faced by EE Controls engineers, and how are they typically addressed within a team setting?

EE Controls engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex electrical control systems, adapting to evolving industry standards, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams during project development. These challenges are typically addressed through collaborative problem-solving, continuous training on new technologies, and clear communication with both internal teams and clients. Regular team meetings and knowledge-sharing sessions help ensure that issues are resolved efficiently and that everyone stays updated on best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical and Electronics Controls Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical and Electronics Controls Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, control systems design, and circuit analysis, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, CAD software, and industry-specific certifications such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license is often required. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help set candidates apart in this role. These skills ensure precise system design, efficient troubleshooting, and successful collaboration on complex engineering projects.

What is the difference between Ee Controls vs Electrical Technicians?

AspectEe ControlsElectrical Technicians
CertificationsTypically requires certifications in control systems, PLC programming, or electrical troubleshootingOften requires electrical trade certifications or licenses
Work EnvironmentDesign, install, and troubleshoot control systems in industrial or commercial settingsInstall, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment
Industry UsageCommonly employed in automation, manufacturing, and control system industriesFound across construction, maintenance, and manufacturing sectors

While both Ee Controls and Electrical Technicians work with electrical systems, Ee Controls specialists focus on control systems and automation, whereas Electrical Technicians handle broader electrical installations and repairs. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

About Aalyria:
Aalyria is a leading technology company that supplies laser communications technology and temporospatial software-defined networking platforms to the aerospace industry. With technology acquired from Google, Aalyria is at the forefront of innovation in satellite and airborne mesh networks, as well as cislunar and deep-space communications. We are revolutionizing the orchestration and management of planetary mesh networks using any radio or optical spectrum, any orbit, and any hardware across land, sea, air, and space.
Role Overview:
Aalyria is developing the wavefront-correction subsystem for high-throughput atmospheric laser communications between Earth and space across a range of orbits. We're seeking an Embedded Controls Engineer to design, implement, test, and field the real-time closed-loop control at the heart of that subsystem. Working closely with our analytical team, who develop the correction approaches, you'll turn candidate methods into robust, low-latency embedded implementations, build the infrastructure to validate them, and carry the subsystem from prototype through initial production to a fielded, maintainable product. You'll investigate, prototype, and improve the adaptive optics hardware, firmware, and associated test and production tooling for a Free Space Optical Communications terminal, selecting for the best balance of practicality, reliability, and affordability from off-the-shelf components wherever possible. Throughout, you'll support and collaborate with the surrounding team of optical, mechanical, electrical, software, and controls engineers.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement wavefront-correction control laws and DSP algorithms (developed with the analytical team) as low-latency, closed-loop embedded C.
  • Design and build lab testbeds and data acquisition to validate loop bandwidth, performance, and robustness.
  • Drive down loop latency and improve uptime and reliability of the control subsystem.
  • Develop control, monitoring, and telemetry software across the full lifecycle: concept โ†’ design โ†’ integration โ†’ test โ†’ release.
  • Support transition of prototype and test infrastructure to manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with optical, mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, and contribute to control-related technical requirements.

Required Qualifications:
  • Degree in EE, controls, CS, physics, or a related field, plus 3+ years developing real-time, closed-loop embedded control systems on hardware.
  • Strong control fundamentals and hands-on experience with MATLAB/Simulink for design, analysis, and simulation.
  • Proven ability to convert control laws, digital filters, and DSP into embedded C and debug them on real hardware.
  • Comfort with nonlinear behavior and practical stabilization techniques (e.g., gain scheduling, linearization).
  • Demonstrated hardware bring-up: instrumentation, test, data acquisition, troubleshooting, and characterization.
  • Works effectively at the seam of algorithms, hardware, and software within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong execution in schedule- and resource-constrained environments.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Optics experience.
  • Fast-steering-mirror, fine-pointing, deformable-mirror, or precision motion/servo control experience.
  • Full-lifecycle experience on a lasercom terminal or comparable electro-optical system.
  • Familiarity with atmospheric laser propagation (amplitude and phase effects) relevant to communications.
  • Experience designing for harsh terrestrial environments.
  • Python, Go, and Linux.

This role is crucial for developing robust, reliable embedded control systems that implement cutting-edge communication capabilities in the field of Free Space Optical Communications.
What We Offer:
  • Innovative Environment: Work at a cutting-edge company shaping the future of aerospace communications.
  • Impactful Work: Directly contribute to critical national security programs and initiatives.
  • Growth Opportunities: Expand your career with opportunities for professional development and advancement.
  • Inclusive Culture: Be part of a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive workplace where your contributions matter.
  • Flexibility: Flexible working arrangements including hybrid remote/in-office schedules.
  • Compensation and Equity: Competitive salary, comprehensive benefits (401(k), dental, vision, health, life insurance), paid time off, and equity options.

ITAR/EAR Requirements:
This position involves access to export-controlled information. To comply with U.S. government export regulations, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
(A) Qualify as a U.S. person, which includes:
  • U.S. citizen or national
  • U.S. lawful permanent resident (green card holder)
  • Refugee under 8 U.S.C. 1157
  • Asylee under 8 U.S.C. 1158

(B) Be eligible to access export-controlled information without requiring an export authorization.
(C) Be eligible and reasonably likely to obtain the necessary export authorization from the appropriate U.S. government agency.
The company reserves the right to decline pursuing an export licensing process for legitimate business-related reasons.
Equal Opportunity Employer Statement:
Aalyria is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age, disability status, genetic information, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
