Job description

Overview

PenFed is hiring a (Onsite) Associate Engineer IT to work onsite at our San Patricio Office Center located in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The primary purpose of this job is to provide basic technical and functional support, maintenance, administration, documentation, and integration development using MuleSoft under direct supervision for PenFed's various enterprise, core, member-facing, and employee-facing applications. This includes designing, developing, and maintaining APIs and integrations that connect PenFed's systems and enable seamless data flow across the organization.


Responsibilities

  • Study assigned systems and technologies to learn the assigned PenFed application(s) environment, along with associated programming languages and support systems/tools.
  • Establish technical knowledge and capabilities through industry related technical research and study, continue to develop improved understanding of systems and technologies.
  • Understand requirements for IT design and coding specifications.
  • Assist with the review of business problems and help develop approaches to provide corrective solution options.
  • Assist with problem ticket research.
  • Research programs and processes to fully understand affected processes, determine problem cause and ultimately provide resolution options along with corrective code.
  • Present to senior/assigned technical staff for review and guidance on testing, verification of enhancement(s) provide the required outcome.
  • Ensure modifications are implemented according to IT design and coding specifications.
  • Develop modifications, unit test corrective processes and integration test whenever possible.
  • Document results, augment existing system documentation or create new when necessary.
  • Assist with the development, documentation, and testing of new products and system enhancements of a simple nature.
  • Work with more senior technical staff to fully understand PenFed Change Control and operational procedures, and these are adhered to for all production changes.
  • Assist with maintaining Penfed’s compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and ordinances by abiding by PenFed compliance program and all policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of changes to policies and procedures within the IT Department.

Qualifications

Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field (e.g., Network Administratin, Engineering Cybersecurity, Soft Engineering, Web Development, Computer Science, etc), or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Working knowledge of object-oriented programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript) preferred.

  • Hands-on experience using AI tooling.

  • Understanding of prompt engineering and core AI concepts (e.g., MCP, Skills, RAG).

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in application integration.

  • Knowledge of integration design patterns for building middleware applications, including synchronous/asynchronous processing, message routing, content enrichment, message filtering, message transformation, guaranteed delivery, message sequencing, batch message processing, error handling, and reconciliation mechanisms.

  • Experience designing API architectures using the Experience, Process, and System API layers.

  • Experience with SOAP, REST, messaging (JMS), and security protocols including Basic Auth, WS-Security, SAML, and OAuth 2.0.

  • Experience developing logging, exception handling, and notification frameworks.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience with infrastructure design, implementation, and support.

  • Working knowledge of Git and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in MuleSoft integration development.

  • Hands-on experience with Mule 4 and DataWeave 2.0.

  • Ability to identify, analyze, and develop interfaces and integration flows using the Anypoint Platform (Mule 4.2 Runtime).

  • Experience with Mule connectors such as Salesforce, Database, SQS, HDFS, and File.

  • Experience with Anypoint Design Center and API Manager.

  • Experience deploying Anypoint Platform solutions across CloudHub, on-premises, and hybrid deployment topologies.

  • Experience with Batch Processing, Scatter-Gather, and Splitter components in Mule flows.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will not supervise employees.

Licenses and Certifications

There are no additional licenses and/or certifications required.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise.

Travel

Ability to travel to various worksites and be on-call is required.

Pay Transparency 
The anticipated starting salary range for this role is $60,000.00 - $90,474.00
This position is eligible for an organizational performance based annual bonus, subject to board discretion and approval. 
This position is eligible for an individual performance based annual bonus.
