Responsibilities:
The Senior Statistician will support Barrow Wise's DoED project and perform the following duties:
  • Create and execute all statistical models required for K-12, postsecondary, teacher, expenditure, and degree projections
  • Clean, harmonize, and validate NCES, Census, and IPEDS datasets
  • Build automated reproducibility workflows and modeling pipelines
  • Conduct anomaly detection, sensitivity analysis, and cross-dataset validation
  • Draft methodological narratives and responses to technical review
  • Produce an updated edition of Projections of Education Statistics from 2030 to 2035 and other final reports
  • Produce projections consistent in structure and detail with NCES 2024-034, including national totals, state and regional breakdowns, disaggregation by demographics
  • Use diverse and complex models, multiple regression, and other econometric models (e.g., time series and exponential smoothing), with a large number of equations to produce projections
  • Re-estimate the two-equation error-correction model, comprising a state education revenue equation and a current expenditures per pupil equation, on an updated data series incorporating the most recently available National Public Education Financial Survey Data (NPEFS) and CCD fiscal data
  • Update mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) tables for all models that have sufficient historical projection series
  • Develop data processing plan and technical documentation
  • Work remotely

An ideal candidate has the following:
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • PhD in a related field
  • 8 years of experience performing statistical modeling and forecasting with educational data
  • Experience with NCES, Census, or IPEDS datasets
  • At least 4 authored publications
  • Experience developing Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning algorithms for advanced data modeling
  • A meticulous eye for detail and a commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-focused environment
