Job description
Provide Student Instruction in Program Courses as Assigned
Provide instruction to a diverse student population in the General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP).
Determine the appropriate material to be covered in the course(s) assigned to teach (subject to Associate Dean and Division Dean approval).
Develop New Courses and Update Existing Courses
Develop new courses and update existing courses as required to keep the General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP) current with industry standards and processes and General Motors requirements. New course development includes writing course objectives, developing syllabi and course Information documents, developing handouts and tests and researching textbooks for course use.
Maintain and Upgrade GM ASEP Classroom / Laboratory / Instructional Facilities / Equipment
Maintain and Upgrade General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP) classroom laboratory, instructional facilities, and equipment to insure that it is maintained in a safe and proper working order for student use.
Complete and Maintain Program and Student Records
Responsible for maintaining permanent student records on courses taught, and following and enforcing College policies regarding attendance, grading, and student achievement. Assist with the completion of purchase orders when ordering program instructional supplies and equipment. Complete production orders on all production projects and maintaining inventory records of all program equipment for the assigned laboratory areas.
Participate in Student Advising of program students as directed by the Dean of Transportation.
Maintain Technical Competency in Teaching Area(s)
Required to stay technically competent in all areas of teaching responsibilities by attending seminars, manufacturer web based and hands-on-training and certification assessments, professional association meetings, conferences, educational workshops, and self-study.
Participate in College and Program Activities and Committees
Will attend, participate in and support all program activities (i.e. Workforce Leadership Team meetings, recruiting opportunities, division meetings, etc.) and College activities and committees as requested. Will act as student and technical advisor for the General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP).
Will advise General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP) students on academic standing, support and explain College policies and procedures with students, and complete all records, forms, etc. as necessary for proper articulation and program operation.
Individualized Development Plan (New Instructors)
Each new instructor will develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the vice president of instruction.
Professional Development
Faculty will work with their immediate supervisor to develop an annual plan of professional development and improvement.
The instructor may have additional duties and responsibilities of supervising and coordinating the activities of the program and its faculty if assigned to be Program Director/Department Chair. The primary role of the Program Director/Department Chair is to ensure that through personal and faculty efforts, students are able to achieve the objectives of the program. The Program Director reports to the Dean or Associate Dean of the Division.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities1. Possess current knowledge and work experience in the Automotive
Technology field. This will include one or more of the following areas: Auto Maintenance and Light Repair, Engine Repair, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Manual Drivetrain and Axles, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, Engine Performance, Light Vehicle Diesel Engines, Automobile Advanced Engine Performance, Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis, Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicles.
2. Minimum of two years current work experience in the Automotive Technology field (related to the instructional assignment) and a working knowledge of other courses in the Automotive Technology field.
3. Be able to demonstrate all types of processes required of a General Motors Automotive technician for the particular courses assigned to teach.
4. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication competencies necessary to conduct classroom and laboratory instruction in working with a diverse student population. Integrates ELE instruction methods effectively.
5. Be able to maintain a classroom/lab environment that is conducive to learning including the ability to maintain proper classroom order.
6. Prepare tests and quizzes that are pertinent to the classroom delivered and laboratory experiences provided and present them on a regular basis. Evaluate and return tests, quizzes and other assigned work within a short period of time to keep students informed of their progress.
7. Ability to develop lab experiences that as closely as possible simulate real business and industry processes. Be able to evaluate the student's ability to perform the lab assignments as objectively as possible.
8. Be able to maintain student interest using various types of teaching media and techniques.
9. Ability to organize and present course material in a logical and timely manner using effective communication skills.
10. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with students and College staff in all types of working relationships.
11. Be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time (one to three hours) when supervising lab work and during class times (one to three hours).
12. Be able to lift from floor to five feet high equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
13. Possess a working knowledge of the Globally Harmonized Hazard Communication Standard/Hazard and Chemical Right-to-Know laws and regulations.
14. Knowledge and skill in using personal computers working with word processing and spreadsheets.
15. The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
- Associate degree in an Automotive Technology field.
- Two (2) years of experience in the automotive field related to the area of Automotive Technology.
- Current ASE Certification in areas of instruction plus G1, or must obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an area related to the assigned instruction.
- Post-secondary teaching experience.
- Associate degree in General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP).
- Current ASE Master Certified.
- Current GM Master Certified.
- Current GM World Class Technician.
