Job description

SCHEDULE/HOURS: Day Shift Mon-Fri 08:30AM – 5:00PM 40 hours per week, some holidays; must be able to adjust schedule to meet the needs of the department.


POSITION SUMMARY:
Lab assistant at our contracted off-site facilities responsible for the following:

  • Assists pathologists with frozen sectioning and staining in a prompt and efficient
    manner, with good quality sections
  • Properly labels and stains all frozen section slides and prepares for transport to PGL
  • Assists with cleanup of frozen section area and weekly supply inventory
  • Maintains all daily QC
  • Retrieve requested slides and/or blocks whenever needed
  • Works with pathologists and other team members to expedite requests and resolve issues in an
    efficient manner
  • Assists pathologist on autopsies
  • Handles request from the PGL sendouts department
    o Pulls slides for slide loan requests when received from PGL sendouts
  • Other duties as assigned by the offsite team lead, Histology Supervisor, and/or
    Pathologists


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High school diploma, some college science preferred. One year of work experience in a medical lab preferred.


OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Dependable. Must be a quick learner with good manual dexterity. Must be able to adapt to changes in work schedule with good analytical and problem solving skills, adjusting priorities as work requirements demand; must be able to perform multiple tasks correctly and simultaneously; must be able to work independently and make decisions based on good judgment; must possess excellent verbal communication skills and must be able to work well with all others.


MENTAL DEMANDS: High degree of mental alertness is required; must demonstrate good judgment in establishing priorities that allow for efficient, effective accomplishment of departmental activities that are frequently under time constraints; be able to handle multiple simultaneous activities with calm resolve; possess excellent phone etiquette and recognize problems that need to be referred and make appropriate referrals.
