What is an education journalist?

Education journalists are reporters and writers who specialize in covering topics related to education, such as schools, universities, education policy, teaching methods, and student experiences. They investigate and report on issues affecting students, teachers, and educational institutions at local, national, or international levels. Their work may appear in newspapers, magazines, online publications, or broadcast media, helping the public stay informed about developments in the education sector.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an education journalist?

To thrive as an Education Journalist, you need strong research, writing, and interviewing skills, often supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, content management systems, and multimedia tools like audio/video editing software is commonly required. These competencies enable journalists to produce accurate, engaging, and impactful stories that inform the public about important educational issues.

In the modern news landscape, the story doesn't wait for a crew. We are seeking a high-energy, versatile Multi-Media Journalist (MMJ) who has the skills to find, shoot, write, and edit compelling content across every platform-from the newscast to a breaking news live stream.

As an MMJ in a Top 10 market, you are a one-person powerhouse. You'll have the editorial freedom to cultivate your own sources and the technical tools to deliver high-quality journalism from the field, whether you're using a professional Sony camcorder or a smartphone.

The Role: What You'll Do

You will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of a news story, ensuring our audience gets accurate information first, no matter where they are watching.

  • Enterprise Reporting: Actively participate in the editorial process by using your contacts and sources to cultivate original story ideas daily.

  • Solo Field Production: Shoot, write, and edit high-quality news packages for broadcast and digital platforms.

  • Live Streaming Expert: Produce and present extended, unscripted live content from the field for our live stream, mastering the art of the "mobile journalist" using smartphone technology and accessories.

  • On-Air Presence: Present stories live in-studio and from remote locations, taking full ownership of the final content and delivery.

  • Digital & Social First: Write sharp, effective text copy for our digital sites and maintain an active, engaging presence on X (Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.

  • On-the-Go Delivery: Travel for overnight assignments and utilize file-based delivery systems to send content back to the station in real-time.

What You Bring to the Table

We are looking for a journalist who is as comfortable with a camera as they are with a keyboard.

  • Technical Proficiency: Significant, current experience with Sony camcorders and Adobe Premiere Pro (or similar NLE systems).

  • Communication & Style: Strong writing skills with a mastery of conversational broadcast style, English grammar, and punctuation.

  • Live Performance: Excellent on-camera delivery with the ability to handle unscripted breaking news situations with poise.

  • Editorial Independence: The confidence to make sound editorial decisions in the field under daily deadline pressure.

  • Public Relations: A polite and professional communicator who can represent the station effectively during promotional appearances and in the community.

Education & Experience

  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience as an MMJ at a commercial television station is preferred.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in Journalism, Communications, or a related field is preferred.

  • Requirements: A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are mandatory.

Why Join Our Newsroom?
