Edtech Developer information

What is an edtech developer?

An Edtech Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains educational technology tools and platforms. Their work involves creating software, apps, and digital resources that enhance teaching and learning experiences. Edtech Developers collaborate with educators, instructional designers, and other stakeholders to ensure the technology meets educational needs and standards. They typically have skills in programming, user experience design, and an understanding of pedagogical principles. The goal of an Edtech Developer is to leverage technology to make education more accessible, engaging, and effective.

How does an edtech developer typically collaborate with educators and instructional designers during the development process?

Edtech Developers frequently work closely with educators and instructional designers to ensure that educational tools and platforms align with pedagogical goals and curriculum standards. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to gather feedback, prototype reviews, and adapting features based on classroom needs. By maintaining open communication, Edtech Developers can create user-friendly, effective learning experiences that truly support both teachers and students. Such teamwork not only streamlines development but also helps in identifying and solving potential usability challenges early on.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an edtech developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Edtech Developer, you need strong programming skills, a background in education technology, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), e-learning authoring tools, and programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or HTML5 is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication help Edtech Developers design engaging, user-friendly educational experiences. These skills ensure the creation of impactful, accessible digital learning solutions that meet both educational goals and user needs.

  • Learning operations: Build repeatable processes to develop, maintain, and improve curriculum efficiently across a growing portfolio of programs.
  • Learning innovation: Develop new learning modalities and apply AI and emerging technologies to personalize learning, improve engagement, and strengthen skill development.
  • Industry alignment: Build strong relationships with healthcare employers, academic experts, and industry organizations to understand emerging learning and workforce needs.
  • Cross‑functional collaboration: Partner closely with Operations, Compliance, and Workforce Solutions to incorporate student and instructor feedback and shape the broader learning experience.

  • Experience managing curriculum developers, instructional designers, subject matter experts, or other learning teams.
  • Highly analytical mindset, using data to improve learning experiences and student outcomes.
  • Ability to translate complex healthcare or technical subject matter into clear and effective learning experiences.
  • Strong communication and cross‑functional collaborative skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, ambiguous environment.
