What are the typical daily responsibilities of an EDM machinist?

As an EDM Machinist, your daily responsibilities include setting up and operating EDM machines, interpreting technical drawings and blueprints, selecting appropriate electrodes and materials, and monitoring machining processes for quality and accuracy. You’ll also perform routine machine maintenance, troubleshoot minor issues, and use precision measuring instruments to verify component dimensions. Collaboration with engineers and other machinists is common to ensure parts meet exact specifications and production deadlines. This role requires a strong focus on safety and quality, as you’ll be handling intricate workpieces used in critical applications.

What is an EDM machinist?

An EDM (Electrical Discharge Machinist) operates specialized machinery that uses electrical discharges to shape metal parts with high precision. They set up, program, and maintain EDM machines such as wire EDM or sinker EDM to create intricate components used in industries like aerospace, medical, and automotive. EDM Machinists read blueprints, select appropriate materials, and ensure quality control throughout the machining process. Their expertise in working with conductive materials and fine tolerances is essential for producing high-precision components.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the EDM machinist position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EDM Machinist, you need a solid understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, and experience operating Electrical Discharge Machines, often supported by technical training or an apprenticeship. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, precision measuring tools, and possibly certifications like NIMS are valuable assets. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are important soft skills for this position. These abilities help ensure the accurate production of intricate components, minimize errors, and support efficient teamwork in a high-precision manufacturing environment.

What does an EDM machinist do?

An EDM (Electrical Discharge Machinist) operates electrical discharge machines to cut, shape, or remove metal parts with high precision. They set up and program the machines, often using CAD/CAM software, and ensure parts meet specifications through quality checks. EDM machinists typically work in manufacturing environments and require knowledge of machining tools and safety procedures.

Job description

Duties and Responsibilities

•  Set up and operate Wire EDM machines (such as Mitsubishi and Current) for production and prototype runs

•  Set up and operate HP EDM machines, including electrode selection, dielectric fluid management, and gap control

•  Read, interpret, and program using NC/CNC EDM code specific to EDM control systems — not general G-code programming

•  Select appropriate wire types, diameters, and tension settings based on material and tolerance requirements

•  Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, and 3D models to verify part conformance

•  Perform in-process inspection using precision metrology instruments including micrometers, CMM, optical comparators, and surface finish gauges

•  Perform secondary operations including deburring, cleaning, and surface preparation specific to EDM-produced parts

•  Maintain machine electrode wear logs, dielectric fluid levels, and filter change schedules

•  Troubleshoot EDM-specific issues including wire breakage, surface finish defects, and electrode wear deviation

•  Ensure all finished parts meet customer specifications and internal quality standards

Minimum Requirements

•  Completion of a formal EDM operator/machinist training program or apprenticeship — general CNC machinist training without EDM-specific curriculum does not satisfy this requirement

•  Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience operating both Wire EDM and HP EDM machines in a production or precision manufacturing environment

•  Demonstrated ability to write and edit NC programs on EDM control systems (Wire and HP)

•  Proficiency reading engineering drawings with GD&T per ASME Y14.5 standards

•  Experience holding tolerances of ±0.0002" or tighter on EDM-machined parts

•  Experience with precision inspection equipment: micrometers, height gauges, CMM, and optical comparators

•  Ability to perform all secondary operations associated with EDM-produced parts (deburring, cleaning, rust prevention)

•  Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in a manufacturing environment

Company Description

We are a full capacity precision machining company. Our capabilities support all facets of fabrication from expedited turnaround of precision prototypes to high volume production; this includes miniature parts requiring sub-fractional tolerances. Our Engineering team will provide assistance with the customer’s project challenges by using best practices for manufacturability.
