What does an Editorial Manager do?

An Editorial Manager oversees the planning, editing, and production of content for publications, websites, or media platforms. They coordinate with writers, editors, and designers to ensure content meets quality standards and aligns with brand or organizational goals. Responsibilities often include managing editorial calendars, enforcing deadlines, and maintaining consistency in tone and style. They may also collaborate with stakeholders to develop content strategies and optimize workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Editorial Manager position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Editorial Manager, you need a strong background in content creation, editing, and project management, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), editorial planning tools, and style guides such as AP or Chicago Manual of Style is common, and certification in editing or digital publishing is advantageous. Leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to mentor and motivate team members are highly valuable soft skills. These competencies ensure efficient editorial workflows, high-quality content, and a positive, collaborative work environment.

What are the main challenges an Editorial Manager faces in coordinating an editorial team?

Editorial Managers often manage multiple projects and tight deadlines, so balancing priorities and ensuring consistent quality across deliverables can be challenging. They must coordinate input from writers, editors, designers, and stakeholders, which requires strong organizational and communication skills. Additionally, adapting to evolving content trends and changing audience preferences requires flexibility and a proactive approach. Overcoming these challenges is crucial for maintaining content standards and meeting both business and audience goals.

The Editorial Manager is a senior content professional who will serve as a champion for brand voice, tone and technical consistency across content channels, including thought leadership reports, client alerts, web announcements, social media posts, advertising and video and podcast scripts. This role will also be central to ensuring the smooth operation of the editorial team, owning and overseeing workflow allocation and prioritization.
The Editorial Manager will bring creative vision and rigorous editorial discipline to Dechert's global communications. A natural storyteller with an instinct for what makes people pay attention, this person is equally comfortable rolling up their sleeves to proofread, edit, and polish work to the highest standard. The Editorial Manager will help ensure that everything the team produces is impactful, persuasive and in the Dechert voice.
Working within the firm's global Marketing team, this position can reside in our Boston, Charlotte, New York, Philadelphia or Washington, D.C. offices. We ask our professionals to work in-person in the office Monday through Thursday because we value being together.

Job Description

  • Serve as a senior writer and editor across a full spectrum of content formats, including thought leadership, client communications, web announcements, social media posts, video and podcast scripts, advertisements, and other firm communications.
  • Act as the team's day-to-day guardian of brand voice and tone, ensuring all content produced is consistent, on-brand, and reflective of Dechert's identity across all channels and formats.
  • Ensure that the team consistently adheres to the Dechert writing style guide.
  • Proofread, copyedit and edit work produced by partners and colleagues across the firm, ensuring technical accuracy, adherence to the firm's style guide, grammatical correctness and an absence of errors.
  • Develop and champion thought-provoking, audience-first content that brings fresh perspectives and creative energy to communications across all channels and aligned to the communication goals of different channels.
  • Collaborate closely with attorneys, practice group leaders and marketing colleagues to surface the firm's best stories and translate complex legal work into compelling, accessible and persuasive content.
  • Communicate clearly and diplomatically with stakeholders across the firm regarding editorial changes and content standards, building productive working relationships that support the firm's strategic goals.
  • Own the triage and routing of incoming content requests- assessing, prioritizing, and directing assignments across the team to ensure workload is distributed equitably, tasks are tiered appropriately by complexity and seniority, and all output meets the team's quality standards.
  • Monitor content across channels and formats for consistency, accuracy and brand alignment, identifying opportunities to raise quality and deepen impact over time.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • 7+ years of experience in a writing and editorial role, with exceptional writing and editing skills across a wide range of content types and formats, including thought leadership, digital and social content, video scripts, podcasts, advertising copy and web announcements. Experience writing for web and SEO/GEO best practices knowledge a plus.
  • A natural, confident storyteller, able to conceptualize fresh, compelling ways to communicate.
  • Deep command of editorial technique: proofreading, copyediting, grammar, style and rigorous adherence to a corporate style guide.
  • Strong instinct for brand voice and tone, with demonstrated experience applying and enforcing brand standards consistently across teams and content channels.
  • Outstanding written and spoken English, with the confidence to sign off on final drafts, work directly with partners and be accountable for delivering the highest standard of work.
  • Resourcefulness and strong project management instincts, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Maturity and sound judgment in handling sensitive, confidential or high-stakes matters within a professional services environment.
  • Enthusiastic team collaborator who thrives in a dynamic environment and contributes positively to team culture.
  • Experience working in a law firm, professional services organization or similarly complex institutional environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of firm operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet operating needs.
