About the Role

Springer Nature is looking to hire a dynamic, progressive Acquisitions Editorial colleague to build our Astronomy book list. We are open to hiring either an Associate Acquisitions Editor or an Acquisitions Editor, depending on experience level, who will be based in our New York City office. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone looking to build a network in the Astronomy field and source authors to publish with the esteemed Springer Nature brand.

The Associate Editor/Editor is responsible for the growth of part of the company's astronomy, astrophysics, and space science book portfolio via acquisition as well as development of existing assets consistent with the company's reputation as a leading academic publisher. The role involves extensive author and editor contact, management of book series, book proposal development and review, contract negotiation, preparation of book manuscripts for production, promotional planning and monitoring of sales, budget and financial planning, and long-range planning for growth and development of the program.

Responsibilities

Editorial Acquisition

  • Pursues an active and efficient acquisitions policy through correspondence, required meetings/trips, telephone, consultations with advisors, etc.

  • Solicits, assesses, and develops book proposals

  • Approximately 25-30% travel, as well as strong initiative and independent functioning.

  • Attends key astronomy and space science conferences and visits scientists at their institutes for the purpose of book acquisition. This also includes planning, setting up, and staffing exhibits of relevant publications.

  • Prepares, negotiates, and executes publishing contracts.

  • Maintains and develops a circle of external reviewers and advisors and evaluates their judgments.

Project Development and Management

  • Manages and develops a selection of astronomy and related book series.

  • Supervises final editorial preparation of book manuscripts for production.

  • Discusses, assumes, and proposes financial and budgetary plans for the program.

  • Develops guidelines, plans, reporting systems, etc., for publishing plans and projects.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Strategic Planning

  • Assesses trends and funding in Astronomy and Space Sciences; evaluates strategies, strengths, and weaknesses of competitors.

  • Prepares long-term planning documents and strategic goals as requested.

  • Maintains communication with US, European, and Asian editorial counterparts about specific immediate questions as well as long-term strategy questions.

  • Reviews and discusses new projects and plans with editorial colleagues, particularly in overlapping areas.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field required; preference for degrees in thenatural sciences (astronomy, space sciences, physics);advanced degree (MSc or PhD) ideal.

  • Experience as an acquisitions editor or related editorial/publishing experience is highly desirable.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required.

  • Must be willing and able to travel

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Editor - $66,300 - $75,000 / Editor - $80,000 - $90,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
