Is EDI integration engineer a good career choice?

An EDI Integration Engineer is a specialized role focused on implementing and maintaining electronic data interchange systems, which are essential for supply chain and business communications. The role typically requires knowledge of EDI standards, scripting, and integration tools, and offers opportunities in logistics, manufacturing, and retail industries. It can be a stable career with growth potential for those with technical skills and industry knowledge.

What is an EDI Integration Engineer?

EDI Integration Engineers are specialized IT professionals who design, implement, and maintain Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems that enable organizations to exchange business documents electronically with partners and customers. They work with various EDI standards and protocols, ensure data accuracy, and troubleshoot integration issues. Their role is crucial in automating transactions such as purchase orders, invoices, and shipping notices, helping businesses improve efficiency and reduce manual processing errors.

What are common challenges faced by an EDI Integration Engineer when onboarding new trading partners?

EDI Integration Engineers often encounter challenges such as differing data formats, varying compliance standards, and the need to map partner-specific requirements during new partner onboarding. Successfully addressing these involves close communication with both internal teams and external partners, thorough testing, and meticulous documentation. Proactive problem-solving and a strong understanding of EDI standards like X12 and EDIFACT are essential to ensure a smooth and efficient integration process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EDI Integration Engineer, and why are they important?

Familiarity with EDI translators, middleware platforms (like IBM Sterling or MuleSoft), and scripting languages, as well as certifications in relevant integration tools, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and resolve integration issues efficiently. • Perform code reviews and enforce development standards, documentation practices, and best practices across the team.
  • Triage and resolve complex production issues across the ERP ecosystem and connected third-party applications.
  • Document technical solutions, integration architecture, and system configurations to maintain a robust knowledge base.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and training to junior team members on ERP development practices and tools.

Position Requirements:
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in ERP development, with demonstrated JDE expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to architect, document, and deliver end-to-end technical solutions across the full ERP development lifecycle.
  • Advanced proficiency in JDE customization tools including Form Design Aid, Report Design Aid, Business Function development, and Orchestrator.
  • Strong understanding of ERP-related business processes, with particular depth in Sales and Distribution, and experience reviewing and translating business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Strong communication skills; able to present technical concepts clearly to non-technical business partners.
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior engineers and contributing to team standards and best practices.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with key third-party systems in the Trek ERP ecosystem, including DSI (warehouse/distribution), Transform (data transformation), ProShip (shipping), and Loftware (labeling).
  • Familiarity with AI tools and their practical application in ERP development workflows (e.g., AI-assisted coding, intelligent automation, or AI-driven process analysis).
  • Experience with integration development using APIs, EDI, web services, or middleware platforms, including familiarity with JDE Orchestrator Framework or cloud integration tools.
  • Familiarity with JDE functional modules beyond Sales and Distribution, such as Finance, Manufacturing, or Transportation Management.
