The William E. Laupus Health Sciences Library (Laupus Library) serves as the primary information resource center for the East Carolina University's instructional, research, and patient care programs in the health sciences. It also serves as a comprehensive information resource center for health care professionals in eastern North Carolina. Laupus Library also serves as a secondary resource of health care information for the local community. At Laupus, we emphasize proactive information provision including the acquisition of current and relevant materials, reference services that recognize the existence of diverse levels of client expertise and needs, and the implementation of new technologies for accessing and managing information.
Job Duties
The Information and Research Services Liaison Librarian provides proactive, library user-centered education, research, and information services using a variety of methods and technologies. This position will serve as a liaison to one or more departments, colleges, or schools within ECU's Health Sciences Campus. The initial and primary liaison assignment will be to the Brody School of Medicine but may include other assignments as needed. This position works closely with teaching and research faculty to integrate library instruction and research expertise into the curricula and culture of assigned programs. The position develops and maintains instructional materials for faculty and students in distance education and on-campus programs. The position also provides expert search services in a variety of health subject areas and serves the needs of faculty, staff and students within all of the colleges and schools in ECU's Health Sciences.
The position serves as a member of the Information and Research Services team and provides excellent customer service in client settings and in the library. The position includes regular reference shifts and related tasks assisting library users as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:
Provides expert reference, searching and research assistance, including systematic reviews and other kinds of expert level searches. Serves as a liaison to assigned programs in colleges and schools in ECU's Health Sciences by building and maintaining strong professional relationships with faculty and students, assessing information needs and responding with appropriate library services and resources, leveraging current technology trends and implementing best practices. Works occasional shifts at the Service Desk including some Saturdays. Provides subject expertise in reviewing and making recommendations for library acquisitions and contributes to the development of library collections and services.

Develops, markets, and delivers instruction sessions on a variety of library and information seeking skills and related topics. This position will assess and maintain awareness of needs in assigned programs. This position creates instructional materials including but not limited to LibGuides, online tutorials, and online classes. Provides tours and library orientation classes as needed. Develops and delivers formal library classes on a variety of related topics as needed. Maintains knowledge and skills related to current technologies and trends in distance education and related fields. Proactively seeks ways to utilize new technologies to improve library skills instruction. Seeks out professional development opportunities as needed.

Provides expert assistance for researchers. Participates in the Laupus Library Systematic Review Service. Counsels and educates users on what constitutes a Systematic Review versus other similar expert level literature searches. Works closely with Research Librarian to assist researchers with a variety of tasks such as but not limited to meeting federal grant requirements, exploring open access publishers, managing research data, research skill development support for undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty scholarship and publishing support.

Participates in the work of the User Services division of Laupus Library and works collegially with Access Services staff.

Participates in Laupus Library committees and projects as assigned.

Participates in scholarly activities and professional service.
Maintains professional demeanor, behavior and ethics.

Performs other duties as assigned.

This position reports to the Associate Director of Laupus Library.

Minimum Education/Experience
ALA accredited master's degree in library or information science, or international equivalent.
New graduates will be considered for this position; ALA accredited degree must have been earned prior to submitting application.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in an academic or health sciences library, or who can communicate a thorough understanding of the roles and functions of a librarian in the health sciences.
