Organizational Unit Overview
ECU's Department of Physician Assistant Studies is a 27-month, master-level curriculum and is accredited by the ARC-PA. It is one of eight departments in the College of Allied Health Sciences (CAHS) and is in a state-of-the-art building on the health science campus in Greenville, NC, along with the College of Nursing and the Laupus Medical Library. The College of Allied Health Sciences is the first and largest college of allied health sciences in North Carolina and graduates the most allied health professionals for the state. The College has a strong working relationship with the ECU Brody School of Medicine, ECU College of Nursing, the East Carolina Heart Institute, ECU Department of Family Medicine, and the School of Dental Medicine. East Carolina University (27,000 students) is an integral part of ECU Health, the regional medical center that serves 29 counties.
ECU is located in Greenville, NC, which is the cultural, educational, medical, and economic center of Eastern NC. The Greenville/Pitt County area has a population of approximately 175,000. Greenville is an ideal, family-oriented community that caters to outdoor and sports enthusiasts. Greenville is 45 miles from I-95 and just over an hour from the capital city of Raleigh. Coastal attractions such as Emerald Isle, the Outer Banks, and Wilmington are easily accessible for day trips. A few noteworthy features of the area follow:

Job Duties
The College of Allied Health Sciences at East Carolina University invites applications for the position of Program Director/Chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies (full-time, 12-month appointment). The successful candidate must be a NCCPA-certified Physician Assistant. The individual will provide leadership for the Department of Physician Assistant Studies and its graduate program,as well as provide leadership to continuously improve the education and scholarship of physician assistant students. The department has strong support and excellent teaching facilities to educate the outstanding students admitted each year.
The Program Director/Chair of the department reports directly to the Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences and is expected to advance the college's vision of state and national distinction in professional education, scholarship, and service. The candidate will be expected to engage in teaching and service activities in accordance with departmental needs. The successful candidate will be eligible for appointment at the Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor level, commensurate with academic preparation and experience. Specific activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Participating in instructional activities, including but not limited to serving as a lecturer/small group facilitator/course director, participating in student assessment, and other instructional tasks
  • Disseminating information from the Administrative Council to faculty, staff, and students as appropriate
  • Holding regular Department meetings as appropriate
  • Working with faculty and staff to achieve consensus on decisions facing the department while respecting the goals of the Department, College, and University
  • Contributing to the formulation and execution of College, University, and accreditation policies and regulations
  • Overseeing the development, execution, and review of a strategic plan in alignment with those of the College and University
  • Developing budget requests in conjunction with the Dean and managing the departmental budget
  • Managing personnel matters within the department, including evaluation, recruiting/retaining/hiring faculty and staff, administering workload, mentorship, and other personnel actions as required
  • Managing curriculum, including planning and initiating changes, and planning enrichment activities
  • Overseeing continuous programmatic review and analysis to be in compliance with ARC standards and policies
  • Overseeing research and service programs carried out under departmental auspices or using departmental resources
  • Engaging in professional development
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Dean

Minimum Education/Experience
Master's or Doctoral degree in PA or related field with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in teaching and/or professional practice.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
Current NCCPA certification
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
At least five (5) years of experience in teaching and/or professional practice.
