What is ecosystem development?

Ecosystem development refers to the process of creating and nurturing a network of interconnected organizations, individuals, and resources that work together to drive growth, innovation, and sustainability within a specific industry or sector. Professionals in this field focus on building partnerships, supporting startups, facilitating collaboration, and creating opportunities for stakeholders to connect and thrive. The goal is to create a healthy environment where businesses, institutions, and communities can collectively advance shared objectives and adapt to changing market needs.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in ecosystem development roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Ecosystem Development often face the challenge of aligning diverse stakeholders, such as startups, corporations, and public organizations, toward common goals. Navigating differing priorities and communication styles can be complex, requiring strong relationship-building and facilitation skills. To address these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication channels, set shared objectives early, and foster a collaborative environment through regular check-ins and transparent reporting. Proactively seeking feedback and being adaptable to evolving needs can also enhance the success of ecosystem initiatives.

Job description

Your opportunity

At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together.  The Schwab Bank Platform Team creates a collaborative connection between Business and Technology to identify, define, prioritize, and deliver high value Core Banking business capabilities and competitive bank features while optimizing for operations efficiency and scale.

We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).

The Transformation Solutions team at Schwab is a cross-functional group that is helping to drive transformation across the firm.  We use a variety of tools and capabilities to drive large-scale change.  Alongside our business and technology partners, we are responsible for protecting and safeguarding the assets of the firm and our clients while continuing to increase scalability, efficiency, and service experience.

The Business Architect role is central to Schwab’s transformation efforts and the firm’s broader “Smart Processing” strategy. Smart Processing is at the center of Schwab’s sustainable competitive advantage.  Smart Processing requires end-to-end, ecosystem strategy, vision, planning, and execution.  When executed well, it drives tangible near-term benefits for Schwab and our clients, including greater scale via increased levels of automation and straight-through processing, greater transparency into service and operational processes, and more efficient and personalized service.  Smart Processing also drives our long-term strategy through creation of data assets that will power AI and Machine Learning applications leading to even greater scale, personalization, and speed to market for Schwab’s next generation of products and features.

As a Business Architect for our Smart Processing ecosystem, you will need to work closely with our Program and Product Managers and process experts to translate their vision and strategy into functional initiatives / initiative-level acceptance criteria that can be consumed, prioritized and actioned by Scrum Teams representing a variety of platforms. You will also be responsible for creating System Interaction Diagrams (Functional), User – System Interaction process flows and other functional requirement artifacts as needed at the Smart Processing engagement level. The artifacts you create should be clearly understood by the underlying platform teams and enable them to create effective platform level functional requirements.

You will play a critical role in the PI Planning and delivery process by collaborating with multiple POs, BAs and scrum teams that span several areas / technologies across the enterprise (Digital, BPM Tools, CRM Tools, Middleware & Mainframe systems) to deliver solutions that provide value for Schwab and our clients.

What you’re good at
  • Gathering, documenting and validating requirements as initiatives / epics / user stories, translating functional requirements to technical requirements, and identifying scalable solutions
  • Partnering with Product Owners and Product Managers to establish a vision and execution strategy
  • Highlighting product features and explaining initiatives in a manner clearly understandable to multiple scrum teams (up to 5-8 Scrum Teams)
  • Creating constant awareness of the backlog's health and managing the progress and maintenance of the entire engagement along with the Product Manager
  • Playing the role of a functional requirement SME and assisting multiple scrum teams with removing impediments and blockers
  • Presenting new ideas, tools, and resources to improve the product evolution process
  • Being able to liaison between lines of business and the development teams, while working with a wide range of stakeholders and collaborating with your team
  • Identifying technology and design issues, coordinating with team members and driving resolution across multiple teams and stakeholders
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams and end-users to create solutions that improve the experience, deliver value, and are synergistic to product roadmaps and future-state vision
  • Coordinating development, testing, and implementation of solutions with vendors as needed
  • Monitoring the progress of product development, and assisting with product release planning and testing
  • Developing meaningful relationships with various stakeholders across the enterprise to achieve common goals

Demonstrating a pragmatic approach to product design and delivery; a ‘bias to action’ and a positive attitude when approaching complex situations
