The Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University is a full-service program advancing the future of biomaterials by educating future leaders and supporting industry and government research. It is part of the College of Natural Resources (CNR) and is also affiliated with the College of Engineering. The Department's responsibilities include teaching, research, extension activities, the awarding of undergraduate degrees (Paper Science and Engineering, Sustainable Materials and Technology), and the awarding of graduate degrees (distance Masters, MS, and PhD degrees in Forest Biomaterials).

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University is seeking candidates for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor with interest and experience in Engineering (paper, chemical, mechanical, biomaterials, or related). The position is a 9-month appointment with responsibilities in the following realms: Research (45 %), Teaching (45 %) and Service (10 %).

The successful candidate is expected to teach core classes in one of the largest and most successful paper science and engineering programs in the world. The candidate is also expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in areas such as: alkaline pulping and bleaching, using both traditional and emerging processes and technology; chemical recovery; biomass conversion; biorefinery process and product development; value-added biobased products and the sustainable bioeconomy.
Rank will be determined based on qualifications.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. degree in Paper Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomaterials Engineering, or closely related field.
    • Candidates with degrees in Mechanical or Materials Engineering are also encouraged to apply if they have relevant pulp and paper experience
  • Be qualified to teach in the ABET-accredited Paper Science and Engineering program
Other Required Qualifications
  • Strong commitment to academic and research excellence, as well as strong commitment and ability to cultivate student success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Ability to teach courses in pulp and paper (e.g., pulping, bleaching, and chemical recovery) at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  • Potential to attract and secure funding for proposed scholarly work from federal agencies and other sources.
  • Ability to cultivate the professional development of graduate students through effective mentoring of scholarly work.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Pulping and bleaching of woody and nonwoody materials
    • Chemical recovery
    • Biomass characterization and conversion
    • Creation of value-added products
    • Chemical processes for conversion of biomass into:
    • Pulp and paper products
    • Materials
    • Bioenergy
  • Strong interest in developing research support from:
    • Competitive funding agencies
    • Industrial partners
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in pulp and paper manufacturing, biomass processing, and/or bio-based product development.
  • A track record of scholarships, publications, and securing grant funding for fundamental or applied research in traditional and emerging pulping and bleaching operations and biobased product development.
  • Proven experience in effective visual, written, and verbal communication.
