The Department of Philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park, is a vibrant and research-active department with strengths across many areas of philosophy, including ethics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, political philosophy, metaphysics, ancient philosophy, logic, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and decision theory. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Philosophy, supports the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major, and contributes substantially to the university's new BA in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. Our faculty and students pursue philosophical questions with rigor, creativity, and attention to their significance for human life, public reason, science, technology, and society.
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a part-time professional-track faculty
position as a Lecturer in Philosophy. The successful candidate will teach three courses per academic year at the undergraduate level. These courses will be in Introduction to Philosophy and Philosophy of Mind. In addition to teaching, responsibilities include support for undergraduate recruitment and outreach, including supporting our departmental advising, assisting the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the Director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major, and the Director of the future Human-Centered AI major in attending recruiting events.
We seek candidates whose teaching and service have prepared them to contribute to the four pillars of the ARHU Strategic Plan: Transformative Thinking; Boundless Creativity; Expansive Empathy; and Meaningful Futures. Contributions toward those goals and values might include leadership in teaching, mentoring, or service toward building an equitable and inclusive scholarly environment and/or increasing access or participation of all individuals equitably and fairly. Lecturers who teach three or more courses over a year are benefits-eligible. The load for this part-time position is three courses per year plus the responsibilities outlined above. The posted salary range is for full-time employment (100% FTE). Part-time employees will receive a prorated salary based on their percentage of employment. This search is contingent upon the availability of funds.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Masters in Philosophy by time of appointment.
Experience: Evidence of excellence in college-level teaching in Philosophy.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
• Ability to teach undergraduate courses in Introduction to Philosophy.
• Ability to teach undergraduate courses in the Philosophy of Mind.
• Knowledge of best practices in undergraduate philosophy pedagogy.
• Ability and commitment to work with a diverse student population.
• Ability and commitment to contribute to departmental advising, outreach, and recruitment.
Preferences:
Education: PHD in Philosophy by the time of appointment
Interest in taking an active role in undergraduate program development, recruitment, and outreach, especially in connection with the Philosophy major, the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major, and the BA in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.
Physical Demands:
Normal classroom teaching demands.
