What are ECMO specialists in training?

ECMO specialists in training are healthcare professionals learning to operate and manage extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines, which provide cardiac and respiratory support to critically ill patients whose heart and lungs are not functioning adequately. These trainees typically come from backgrounds such as nursing, respiratory therapy, or perfusion and undergo specialized education and hands-on experience under supervision. Their training covers patient monitoring, equipment management, emergency procedures, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient care. Completing the training is essential to become a certified ECMO specialist.

To thrive as an ECMO Specialist In Training, you need a solid background in critical care, strong knowledge of cardiopulmonary physiology, and a healthcare license such as RN, RT, or perfusionist certification. Familiarity with ECMO circuit operation, monitoring systems, and completion of specialized ECMO training courses are typically required.
