As Electric Boat continues to support construction of the VIRGINIA Class and COLUMBIA submarine programs, our Quality Organization plays a critical role in ensuring every component meets the highest standards of safety, performance, and reliability.


The Supervisor of Radiation Safety reports to the Manager of Nuclear Quality - Radiation Protection and supports the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in managing all aspects of the radiation protection program within industrial radiography and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) operations. This role provides daily oversight of the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer(s) (ARSO), radiography operations, ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, maintains strict control over licensed radioactive materials, and promotes a strong safety culture across the field of operations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise ARSOs ensuring qualifications, certifications, and training remain current.
  • Conduct routine surveillances of field operations, permanent radiographic bays, project sites, storage vaults, and transport operations.
  • Oversee compliance with NRC or Agreement State licensing requirements and regulations related to industrial radiography, including, but not limited to, the requirements of 10 CFR 34.
  • Monitor and verify the proper use, maintenance, and security of radiographic exposure devices, source projectors, guide tubes, collimators, and associated equipment.
  • Ensure proper surveillance and control of radiography operations, including boundary posting, dosimetry use, and adherence to safe working distances.
  • Investigate abnormal events, equipment malfunctions, source disconnects, or potential overexposures and assist the RSO with reporting requirements.
  • Manage inventory, leak testing, receipt, storage, and transportation of licensed radioactive sources in accordance with regulatory and license conditions.
  • Provide radiation safety training, including refreshers, crew talks, and emergency response guidance to ARSOs.
  • Coordinate instrument calibration schedules, daily functionality checks, and proper usage of radiation detection equipment.
  • Develop, review, and update standard operating policies and procedures for conducting radiography operations to reinforce principles required to conduct safe operations and to mitigate, detect, and correct unsafe work practices.
  • Maintain required radiation records related to; personnel dosimetry, training, UT logs, equipment maintenance, and any other records as required.
  • Support emergency preparedness planning and conduct periodic drills for potential unplanned radiographic incidents.
  • Serve as a safety resource for project managers, radiographers, and clients, helping evaluate job hazards and ensure radiographic operations are conducted safely and efficiently.
  • Act as a force multiplier to industrial radiography operations by enabling available radiation safety tools and techniques (e.g. shielding, isodose, etc...) in production environments.

This position is first shift and is located at Electric Boat's Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, RI

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5+ years of experience in industrial radiography or radiation safety.
  • Strong working knowledge of USNRC and Agreement State regulations, and DOT regulations for shipping, receipt, and transport of Type A/Type B packages.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising technicians or leading operational teams in industrial environments.
  • Proficiency with gamma radiography equipment for Co-60, Ir 192, and Se 75 sources, X-Ray machines, X-Ray producing devices, and other associated radiation safety instrumentation.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate safety efforts across multiple job sites.

Preferred:

  • Current ASNT (American Society for Non-Destructive Test) IRRSP (Industrial Radiography Radiation Safety Personnel) certification or equivalent.
  • Experience with non-destructive testing (NDT) operations and safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with radiation safety management software, electronic dosimetry systems, and digital field reporting tools.
  • Bachelor's degree in health physics, radiological science, industrial safety, or related discipline (equivalent experience may be considered).
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance to obtain T&R status.
