What is an EMT supervisor?

EMT Supervisors are experienced emergency medical technicians who oversee and coordinate the work of EMTs and paramedics in the field. They are responsible for managing emergency response teams, ensuring adherence to protocols, providing guidance during medical emergencies, and sometimes handling administrative duties. EMT Supervisors also help with training, scheduling, performance evaluations, and ensuring high standards of patient care. Their leadership is essential for efficient and effective emergency medical services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMT supervisor?

To thrive as an EMT Supervisor, you need advanced emergency medical knowledge, leadership experience, and typically certification as a Paramedic or EMT with supervisory training. Familiarity with dispatch systems, electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) tools, and incident command protocols is essential. Strong communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills help in effectively managing teams and high-pressure situations. These competencies ensure effective oversight, high-quality patient care, and efficient emergency response operations.

What are some common challenges EMT supervisors face when managing a team of EMTs?

EMT Supervisors often encounter challenges such as balancing administrative responsibilities with field operations, ensuring consistent communication across shifts, and managing high-stress situations. They are responsible for scheduling, performance evaluations, and addressing conflicts within the team, all while maintaining high standards of patient care. Effective supervisors invest time in team development and foster a supportive environment to ensure EMTs are prepared for the demands of emergency response.

Job description

EMT Supervisor

Fourth Street Clinic helps Utahns experiencing homelessness improve their health and quality of life by providing high-quality, integrated healthcare. Our team is passionate, collaborative, and deeply committed to health equity and human dignity.

As EMT Supervisor, you'll keep Fourth Street Clinic's community-based EMT services steady, safe, and people-centered across Salt Lake County. This role exists to support EMT staff in the field and make sure trauma-informed medical support lines up with provider treatment plans and clinic standards. Key responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day field supervision, scheduling coordination, and real-time support to EMT staff
  • Oversee EMT operations in shelters and street-based settings, including readiness, supplies, and workflow follow-through
  • Ensure safe practice within scope, with strong documentation, data tracking, and operational reporting
  • Support patient stabilization through triage, wound care, emergency response, referrals, and care coordination
  • Partner with multidisciplinary teams and community responders to keep handoffs smooth

Required qualifications:

  • High school diploma/equivalent
  • 2+ years EMS experience
  • Utah Advanced EMT (or higher) with BLS, ACLS, PALS
  • EMS Instructor/Training Officer certs (or willingness to obtain)
  • Valid driver's license; able to travel between sites

You'll start onsite Monday–Friday (8am–6pm) by checking coverage, confirming who's where, and making quick tweaks so the day's outreach runs smoothly. From there, you're bouncing between locations—touching base with EMTs, answering "quick questions" that never stay quick, and keeping an eye on how things are flowing in real time. Midday often includes syncing with clinic teammates, reviewing notes and numbers, and smoothing out any bumps—like a supply snag or a communication gap—before it turns into a bigger issue. You'll also stay close to what's happening in the community so EMTs feel supported and patients experience consistent, respectful care. By late afternoon, you're wrapping up follow-ups, flagging training needs, and setting the next day up for a clean start.

- Competitive salary Starting at $53,560 DOE

- Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage, 401(k), Life Insurance, Health Savings Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Account (FSA), Paid Time Off (PTO)

Must be able to pass a background check, including fingerprints.
