What is ECS engineering?

ECS Engineering typically refers to the field of engineering that focuses on Environmental Control Systems (ECS), which are crucial for managing air quality, temperature, and humidity in various environments such as buildings, vehicles, and industrial facilities. ECS engineers design, implement, and maintain systems that ensure safe and comfortable conditions, often in settings like aircraft, spacecraft, or large buildings. Their work involves integrating mechanical, electrical, and control systems to achieve optimal environmental conditions and energy efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ECS engineer?

To thrive as an ECS (Engineered Control Systems) Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical, control, or mechanical engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and industry experience. Proficiency with PLC programming, SCADA systems, and CAD software, as well as certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) or specific vendor qualifications, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help ECS Engineers collaborate effectively and adapt to project demands. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing, implementing, and maintaining reliable control systems that ensure operational efficiency and safety.

What are some common challenges faced by ECS engineers, and how can I prepare to address them in my role?

ECS (Environmental Control Systems) Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating complex systems within tight project timelines, ensuring compliance with evolving environmental regulations, and troubleshooting unexpected technical issues. Being proactive in communication with multidisciplinary teams, staying updated on industry standards, and developing strong problem-solving skills can help address these challenges. Additionally, gaining hands-on experience with relevant simulation tools and project management practices will prepare you to navigate the dynamic work environment typical in this field.

What is the difference between Ecs Engineering vs Cloud Engineer?

AspectEcs EngineeringCloud Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires engineering degrees, certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect, and experience with cloud servicesOften requires similar certifications, including cloud platform-specific credentials and engineering degrees
Work EnvironmentDesigning, deploying, and managing cloud infrastructure, often in data centers or cloud platformsDeveloping and maintaining cloud solutions, working with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by tech companies, cloud service providers, and enterprises deploying cloud infrastructureCommon in IT firms, cloud service providers, and organizations migrating to cloud solutions

While both roles involve working with cloud technologies, Ecs Engineering focuses more on designing and managing cloud infrastructure, whereas Cloud Engineers develop and implement cloud-based applications and solutions. Both roles require similar certifications and work in overlapping environments, but their primary responsibilities differ slightly.

Is ECS engineering a good company to work for?

ECS Engineering is a staffing and engineering services company that provides opportunities in various technical fields. Employee experiences can vary, but the company generally offers roles requiring skills in engineering, IT, and project management, with a focus on contract and permanent positions. Researching specific job roles and company reviews can provide more insight into work environment and culture.

Job description

Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) runs millions of container tasks every day, and every feature a customer configures or deploys flows through the Developer Surfaces layer before it becomes real. That layer is what we build. The ECS Developer Platforms team owns the customer-facing API, AWS CloudFormation resource coverage, AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) constructs, and Terraform provider support for ECS.

We are looking for a Software Development Engineer II who wants to design, build, and operate the API and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) surfaces that hundreds of thousands of AWS customers depend on. You will work in Java, TypeScript, and Go across three IaC ecosystems, collaborate with backend teams on every feature launch, and build internal platform tooling that the broader ECS organization relies on to ship safely. This is a newly formed team where you will have direct influence on technical foundations and architectural decisions that shape how ECS customers interact with the service for years to come.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and build customer-facing API endpoints and IaC resource providers (CloudFormation, CDK, Terraform) so that every new ECS capability ships with full developer surface coverage on launch day.
- Collaborate with ECS backend pillar teams (Scheduling, Networking, Deployments) and AWS-wide IaC teams to co-design API contracts, resource models, and release plans for new features.
- Own internal platform tooling - feature flag systems, automated testing pipelines, and deployment safety mechanisms - that the entire ECS engineering organization depends on to ship quickly and reliably.
- Participate in code reviews, mentor fellow engineers, and author API and IaC design documents that define the developer experience for hundreds of thousands of AWS customers.
- Investigate operational issues through oncall rotations and root cause analysis, driving permanent fixes that improve the reliability and performance of the API and IaC fleet.
A day in the life
You might start the morning reviewing operational metrics for the ECS API fleet, then join a design session with a backend team to model a new networking primitive as a CloudFormation resource and CDK construct

After lunch you could be writing Go code for the Terraform provider, reviewing a teammate's pull request for a feature flag rollout, or pairing with a newer engineer on contract testing for an IaC resource handler. You will regularly write design documents and coordinate release timelines with AWS-wide IaC teams.
About the team
The ECS Developer Platforms team sits within Amazon ECS under AWS Containers, alongside the Scheduling, Networking, and Deployments pillars. We are the only team in ECS with a horizontal view across every feature the organization ships - nothing is customer-visible until it passes through our layer

The team is small (8 to 10 engineers) and engineers own planning, prioritization, and cross-team coordination directly, which means more ownership and broader exposure than a typical software engineering role. We are investing in full IaC parity across all three ecosystems, greenfield internal platform capabilities, and the growing intersection of AI-generated infrastructure code, and we are looking for collaborative engineers ready to help shape what comes next.
