Dunnage information

What is dunnage?

Dunnage refers to materials used to protect and secure cargo during transportation. These materials can include wood, foam, airbags, or other packing items that prevent movement, absorb shock, and minimize damage. Dunnage is essential in shipping and logistics to ensure goods arrive at their destination safely and intact. It can also help separate items, fill empty spaces in containers, and prevent moisture buildup. Proper use of dunnage can save companies money by reducing product loss and claims.

What does a dunnage handler do?

As a Dunnage Specialist, your daily tasks usually revolve around preparing, organizing, and placing protective materials to secure goods during storage and transit. This includes selecting the appropriate dunnage materials (such as airbags, foam, or cardboard), ensuring items are stabilized within containers, and inspecting packaging for safety compliance. You’ll collaborate closely with warehouse associates, forklift operators, and shipping coordinators to ensure cargo is efficiently and safely packed. Attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols are essential to prevent product damage and optimize warehouse operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a dunnage handler?

To thrive as a Dunnage Handler, you need basic knowledge of warehouse operations, material handling, and safety protocols, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with forklifts, pallet jacks, and inventory management systems is typically used in this role. Attention to detail, reliability, and effective teamwork are soft skills that make someone stand out. These skills ensure the safe, efficient movement and protection of goods, which is critical for smooth warehouse and shipping operations.

What is the difference between Dunnage vs Material Handler?

AspectDunnageMaterial Handler
CredentialsNone specific, safety training often requiredForklift certification often required
Work EnvironmentWarehouses, shipping yards, manufacturing plantsWarehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing facilities
Job RoleProtects goods during transit, uses packing materialsMoves, loads, unloads materials and products

While both roles operate in warehouse and shipping environments, Dunnage focuses on protecting goods during transit using packing materials, whereas Material Handlers primarily move and handle materials within facilities. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers find the right fit for their skills and needs.

What are the different types of dunnage?

Dunnage refers to materials used to protect and secure cargo during transportation. Common types include wood dunnage, such as planks and blocks; air-filled dunnage like airbags; foam dunnage for cushioning; and paper or cardboard dunnage for lightweight protection. The choice depends on the cargo's weight, fragility, and shipping environment.
