Employees in the Senior Engineer position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization without close supervision. Candidates are expected to develop skills and the ability to work with greater independence. Candidates are expected to have knowledge of fundamental concepts of electric power systems.
Our Engineers are a vital part of our organization, and we take pride in hiring the best in the industry. We are looking for an Electrical Engineer on the Deriva Energy Team to perform and troubleshoot complex problems and develop advances solutions within power systems. This role may require supervisory functions including assisting team members, collaboration with other departments, suppliers and manufactures.
This position will develop engineering and technical skills to support various Deriva Energy internal groups in pursuit of Electrical and Power system projects. Applicants are expected to have engineering skills related to power system modeling distribution and/or transmission electric systems and understand primarily renewable technology such as solar, wind and battery storage.
Responsibilities
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results
  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Five (5) years or more of relevant engineering experience and state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) OR 6 years related work experience without state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Must be able and willing to travel to various locations to support area manager's various sites on a frequent basis (Up to 10% travel)
  • Must be able to respond to Electrical Engineering & Plant Support outside normal working hours (Team 24/7 on-call rotation)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Six (6) years or more of relevant engineering experience and state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles
  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations,
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in principles of project management
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • Modeling studies, testing & reports (PSSe, SKM, MathCad, ASPEN, PSCAD, PSLF)
  • Breaker Trip response and PRC-004 Report Analysis
  • Knowledgeable in communications Protocols (Modbus, Serial & DNP) Understands SEL (Schweitzer Eng. Labs) Control Element Settings Ranges and Accuracies
  • Experience in SEL (Schweitzer Eng. Labs) Relays, Meters
  • Experience in high voltage and sub-station maintenance
  • Experience or proven understanding of transformers, HV & LV cables and Inverter Based Resources, (SEL relays & GE " L" series relays preferred)
  • Experience in wind farm or solar farm electrical collection systems, grid connections, inverters, and wind turbines
  • Support compliance with NERC Reliability Standards applicable to Generator Owners and Generator Operators
  • Conduct root cause analysis for electrical equipment failures and develop corrective actions

Specific Requirements
  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Working Conditions
  • This position is located in Charlotte, NC
  • Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Deriva Energy facility
  • Must be able and willing to travel to various locations to support area manager's various sites
  • Must be able to respond to O&M Support outside normal working hours (Team on-call rotation)
  • Travel up to 10%
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be able to lift up to and carry up to 25lbs
  • The hiring manager may elect to fill this position at the higher-level dependent upon skills and experience
