Job Summary:
As the Equipment Operator, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining construction equipment, supporting underground telecommunications and utility construction activities, and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently. You will prepare equipment and job sites, support excavation and restoration activities, maintain required documentation, and work closely with the Foreman and construction crew. Success in this role requires safe equipment operation, attention to detail, teamwork, quality workmanship, and a strong commitment to safety.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
· Prepare trucks, trailers, and construction equipment for daily operations, including inspections, fueling, greasing, cleaning, and preventative maintenance.
· Operate backhoes, excavators, micro-trenching equipment, and other assigned construction machinery safely and efficiently.
· Survey job sites for marked utilities, sprinklers, and other potential obstacles before excavation and safely hand-dig around identified utilities as required.
· Load and unload equipment, support trenching and excavation activities, backfill and compact trenches, and restore landscaping and work areas.
· Maintain accurate daily paperwork, including timecards, charge-outs, receipts, equipment checklists, DOT documentation, materials used, and man-hours.
· Communicate with the Foreman regarding safety requirements, job progress, work needs, and potential issues while actively participating in crew and safety meetings.
· Follow all company safety policies and procedures, support traffic control and quality control activities, and maintain a safe environment for employees, customers, and the public.
· Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs.
Required Qualifications:
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Experience
· Experience operating construction equipment such as backhoes, excavators, or similar heavy equipment.
· Experience working around underground utilities, telecommunications, utility, or construction projects preferred.
Skills and Abilities
· Ability to safely operate and maintain construction equipment and basic mechanical tools.
· Ability to identify and work safely around marked underground utilities and other job-site hazards.
· Ability to complete daily paperwork, equipment checklists, and project documentation accurately.
· Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work effectively with Foremen, crew members, customers, and the public.
· Ability to work independently, follow instructions, and adapt to changing job-site conditions.
· Positive, dependable, and safety-focused approach with a commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience operating micro-trenching equipment and/or mini excavators.
· Experience working around underground utilities in telecommunications or utility construction.
· Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
· Experience with DOT inspections and equipment maintenance.
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 90 lbs.
· Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
· Work performed outdoors and in varying and inclement weather conditions.
· Ability to safely operate and work around heavy equipment, machinery, active construction zones, and moving vehicles.
· Ability to maintain visual and audible awareness of crew members, vehicles, equipment, and surrounding work areas.
· Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat, and other applicable safety gear.
· Ability to travel to project locations as business needs require.
