Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is offering an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Manager to join the Technology underwriting team. In this leadership role, you will shape how we deliver Duck Creek-based solutions — guiding Tech Leads, overseeing engineering resources, and ensuring teams deliver scalable, secure, and reusable solutions on Duck Creek Technologies. The role will provide leadership to develop team members skills across configuration, integration, and solution design within Duck Creek Policy, while ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture and compliance standards.

A critical part of this role is developing junior team members and enable them to grow their technical skills as well as individual leadership capabilities. This role will work closely with Technology leaders across our large commercial insurance platform to ensure delivery and strategy goals are being met in both the short and long term.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, coach, and mentor engineers and Tech Leads across multiple Agile teams.
  • Build a culture of collaboration, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
  • Support career growth and leadership development within the engineering community.

Technical Direction & Duck Creek Delivery

  • Oversee Duck Creek solution design and configuration, ensuring scalable and reusable product chassis.
  • Provide technical direction across Duck Creek Policy, Billing, Claims, and third-party integrations.
  • Champion engineering best practices including test-driven development, CI/CD, observability, and maintainability.
  • Ensure engineering delivery prioritizes performance, reliability, and usability for business partners.
  • Align engineering practices with enterprise architecture, cybersecurity, and compliance standards.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • 15+ years of progressive software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Direct experience with Duck Creek Technologies (Policy, Billing, Claims) including configuration, integration oversight, and delivery management required.

  • Proven track record leading multiple engineering teams delivering enterprise-grade insurance solutions.
  • Experience overseeing and managing vendor engineering delivery (Duck Creek preferred).
  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and scaled delivery models.
  • Domain knowledge of Property & Casualty insurance systems; Small Commercial experience a plus.
  • Deep knowledge of cloud platforms, microservices, and event-driven systems.
  • Experience coordinating engineering delivery across global teams and time zones.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to align technical execution with strategic business objectives.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and team-focused, with a strong sense of ownership.

BHSI Offers:

  • A competitive package and exciting growth opportunities for career-oriented teammates.
  • A dynamic, action oriented, and thoughtful environment centered on always doing the right thing for our customers, teammates, and our other stakeholders.
  • A purposely non-bureaucratic organization that embraces simplicity over complexity and emphasizes individual excellence in a team framework.
  • Benefits that support your life and well-being, which include:
  • Comprehensive Health, Dental and Vision benefits
  • Disability Insurance (both short-term and long-term)
  • Life Insurance (for you and your family)
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance (for you and your family)
  • Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Health Reimbursement Account
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Retirement Savings 401(k) Plan with Company Match
  • Generous holiday and Paid Time Off
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Paid Parental Leave

The base salary range for this position in Boston is $165,000 - $190,000 along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.

NOTE: Compensation will be commensurate with experience. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Team Member may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
