What is a DSP?

DSP stands for Direct Support Professional. DSPs are caregivers who assist individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities in daily living activities, helping them achieve greater independence and quality of life. Their responsibilities can include personal care, meal preparation, transportation, medication management, and supporting social or community engagement. DSPs often work in group homes, private residences, or community settings, and their work is essential in promoting inclusion and empowerment for people with disabilities.

What does a DSP do?

A typical day for a Direct Support Professional (DSP) involves assisting individuals with disabilities in their daily activities, which may include personal care, medication management, and helping clients participate in community events. DSPs often work as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating closely with nurses, case managers, and therapists to ensure each individual's care plan is followed. Regular communication with families and reporting on progress or concerns are also important aspects of the role. This collaborative environment helps ensure that clients receive consistent, high-quality support tailored to their needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DSP?

To thrive as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you need a basic understanding of personal care, behavioral support, and documentation, often supported by a high school diploma and relevant training. Familiarity with care documentation systems, first aid/CPR certification, and sometimes medication administration systems is typically required. Compassion, patience, strong communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding DSPs apart. These abilities ensure the safety, well-being, and quality of life for individuals with disabilities while supporting effective teamwork and compliance with care standards.

Job description

Who we are:

At Family Relief Resources (FRR), our mission is to provide families and clients with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities with the quality, person-centered daily care they need. We provide qualified DSPs who have a passion and drive to help these individuals, with a positive, stable, and highly compensated work opportunity. We recognize this is a special gift and we are dedicated to helping every DSP to find the client they are meant to help.

1B0401G and 1B0400G.

Location: SE Portland

Schedule: Every Sunday from 3pm to 8pm.

*Sunday shifts are alternated between two clients living in the same home.

We are seeking a caring and attentive Direct Support Professional (DSP) to support two loving and friendly 8-year-old twin girls who thrive on connection and opportunities to be independent. They enjoy socializing, playing indoors/outdoors and exploring their community.

The ideal candidate is someone who is friendly, patient, understanding and is able to provide routine and structure. This role is perfect for someone who can both be a supportive caregiver and a positive companion who respects, values and empowers the client's voice and individuality.

One of the clients uses a manual wheelchair and requires physical assistance for transfers. The family also needs support with this client's catheterization, enemas, and daily bowel flushes.

Both of the clients may require prompting and support with personal care tasks such as hygiene, toileting, bathing and dressing. Both of the clients benefit from somebody who can keep up with their physical therapy exercises and provide opportunities to practice balance and coordination. This position is also well-suited for someone who can help create opportunities for social interaction and support the development of pro-social skills and friendships.

Start Date: 09/01/2026.

Responsibilities:

Provide close supervision and support during community outings.

Carefully monitor during meals and fluid intake.

Requirements:

Spanish Speaking or Bilingual is strongly preferred.

Need to be delegated by the client's nurse.

Work with both clients, but 1 client per shift.
