Job description

Job Title: Shipping/Coating Quality Inspector

Reports To: Plant Quality Engineer

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary:

The Shipping/Coating Quality Inspector is responsible for verifying that all products meet company quality standards and customer requirements prior to shipment throughout multiple stages of the manufacturing process. This position performs inspections of fabricated and welded products prior to shipment to external powder coating suppliers, verifies coating quality upon return, performs final product and packaging inspections prior to customer shipment, and conducts incoming inspections of purchased materials and components from suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-shipment inspections of product prior to shipment to external powder coat vendors.
  • Verify product completeness, packaging, and overall product condition before release
  • Inspect powder coated products upon return from powder coat suppliers, inspecting for: finish quality, coating thickness/gloss, surface defects, damage, and compliance with acceptance criteria.
  • Perform final inspections of product prior to shipment to customers, verifying: assembly completeness, appearance, proper labeling, and compliance to engineering drawings/customer requirements.
  • Inspect incoming products against engineering and customer drawings, and inspection criteria.
  • Accurately document inspection results in accordance with AES QMS requirements
  • Identify, document, and report nonconformant products, and initiate containment activities.
  • Follow all company safety policies, and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Plant Quality Engineer.

Skills

  • Experience using measuring instruments including: tape measures, squares, calipers, micrometers, dry film thickness gauges, and others as required.
  • Ability to identify quality issues before product leaves the facility.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of company personnel and customers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, SharePoint, etc.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED; Associates degree or technical certification in Quality Assurance, Engineering, or a related field preferred
  • 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment; preferably metal fabrication.
  • Prior background in quality assurance, quality control or related field in manufacturing and/or inspection.
  • Familiarity with nonconformance reporting (NCR), corrective actions (CA) and quality documentation.
  • Knowledge of passivation, coatings, coating inspections and testing.

Desired Experience

  • Experience working within an ISO 9001-certified manufacturing environment.
  • Lean Manufacturing/Continuous Improvement experience – Exposure to methodologies like Six Sigma or Kaizen to drive process improvements.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching throughout the day
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to work in manufacturing and warehouse environments
  • Ability to distinguish colors and surface defects for coating inspection
