Drone Training information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Drone Training, and why are they important?

To thrive in Drone Training, you need a strong understanding of aviation regulations, drone operation principles, and often a certification such as the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Familiarity with flight planning software, drone simulators, and various drone models is essential for hands-on instruction. Excellent communication, patience, and adaptability help instructors effectively teach diverse learners and troubleshoot challenges. These skills ensure safe, compliant, and effective training for aspiring drone operators in an evolving industry.

What are some common challenges faced by drone trainers when instructing new pilots, and how can these be overcome?

Drone trainers often encounter challenges such as varying levels of student experience, adapting to different learning styles, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. To overcome these, trainers typically use a mix of classroom instruction, flight simulation, and hands-on practice to cater to diverse learners. Clear communication, structured lesson plans, and regular performance feedback help build student confidence and competence. Additionally, staying updated on the latest regulations and drone technology ensures that training remains relevant and effective.

What is drone training?

Drone training refers to the process of learning how to safely and effectively operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones. This training typically covers topics such as flight controls, navigation, regulations, safety procedures, and maintenance. Many courses also prepare students for certification exams required by aviation authorities, like the FAA Part 107 in the United States. Completing drone training ensures operators understand both the technical and legal aspects of flying drones for recreational or commercial purposes.

What is the difference between Drone Training vs Drone Pilot Certification?

AspectDrone TrainingDrone Pilot Certification
Required CredentialsTraining courses, safety protocolsFAA Part 107 exam, license
Work EnvironmentClassroom, online, practical sessionsField operations, flight testing
Industry UsagePreparation for drone operation rolesLegal authorization to fly commercially
PurposeLearn skills, safety, regulationsOfficial certification to operate commercially

Drone Training provides the foundational knowledge and skills needed to operate drones safely and effectively. Drone Pilot Certification, on the other hand, is a formal credential issued after passing the FAA exam, allowing individuals to legally fly drones for commercial purposes. While training prepares you for certification, obtaining the license is essential for legal commercial drone operations.

Job description

Do you want to dive in the fast-growing industry of drones and get a rewarding experience in a dynamic scale up environment?

At Flyability, we believe that robots should be sent into hazardous places and dangerous situations instead of humans. To support our belief, we created Elios, the world’s first collision-tolerant flying robot that for the first time allows remote entry to complex and indoor spaces. With more than 130 employees, Flyability is the pioneer in the UAV indoor inspection industry. Joining Flyability is not just taking on a new job, it is seizing the opportunity to improve the life of millions of people and build the future of robotics.

To complete our creative and dynamic team in Denver, we are seeking a:

Drone Pilot & Trainer (100%)

Your role:

This role will be responsible for demonstrating Flyability’s technology across the US, Canada and Mexico across a number of industrial assets, working very closely with the Sales Team. Furthermore, you will be in charge of performing training sessions - both in person and virtual ones - with clients, as well as providing technical assistance and repairs.

On a day-to-day basis, you will often be travelling to assist with demonstrations and perform Proof of Concepts in-asset on industrial sites. You will also be called to support our customers by providing technical expertise for their various inspection missions, as well as offer first-line support if needed. We are looking for someone with piloting expertise in drones, who is curious, independent and has proven field experience. We are looking for someone who has experience with lidar in a surveying capacity. More than just a pilot.

What you will own:

  • Fly the Flyability drones inside various industrial assets for demonstrations and Proof of Concepts for prospects and customers to demonstrate the value of the product
  • Provide customers and partners with assistance in mission planning and execution
  • Assist the sales team with complex piloting needs during events and during roadshows
  • Assist the successful onboarding of customers and partners by walking them through the training process, and performing training when needed
  • Perform maintenance and piloting training for partners
  • Coordinate trainings for customers with commercial partners
  • Manage training and technical partnerships
  • Assist with other tasks required by the team as needed

Requirements

Your profile:

  • 3-5 years of experience in operating drones or robotic devices
  • Surveying experience, including processing visual data and 3d models
  • FAA PArt 107 certificate
  • NDT experience is a strong asset
  • Ability to work on industrial sites (refineries, chemical plants, mines, etc) which may require climbing multiple flights of stairs, working at heights, or working in hazardous environments
  • Ability to load, unload and set up equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proven track-record in a customer facing role, providing support and expertise
  • Proactive, principled, and effective in international, cross-functional teams
  • Fluent English; other languages - e.g. French, Spanish, are a strong asset
  • Ability and willingness to travel across US, Canada, & Mexico

Travel

  • Willingness to travel up to 75% of the time, with peaks of 100%, sometimes over the weekend; travel may be conducted alone or with sales personnel.
  • A company credit card will be provided for all business travel expenses.
