POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading the planning, design, and execution of complex mechanical engineering projects within the fire apparatus industry. This role provides advanced technical expertise, serves as a design authority for assigned products or systems, and supports cross-functional teams through mentorship, problem-solving, and engineering leadership. The Senior Mechanical Engineer is expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy and contribute to continuous improvement, standardization, and innovation.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Technical Leadership & Design
    • Lead the design and development of mechanical systems and assemblies from concept through production release.
    • Prepare, review, and approve engineering drawings and specifications.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert for assigned systems.
  • Production & Cross-Functional Support
    • Support manufacturing and resolve design-related issues.
    • Collaborate with supply chain, quality, and service teams.
  • Project & Process Ownership
    • Lead engineering projects and design reviews.
    • Contribute to engineering standards and documentation.
  • Mentorship & Collaboration
    • Mentor junior engineers.
    • Support onboarding and training.
  • Any other duties as assigned

Experience & Educations:

  • 8–12+ years mechanical engineering experience.
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • PE preferred.

Measurable Expectations

  • 3–5 major projects per year.
  • 95% on-time deliverables.
  • Year-over-year reduction in design issues.
  • 1 Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) or design reviews annually.
  • Mentor 1–3 engineers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • 3D CAD modeling proficiency, preferably SolidWorks, and familiarity with AutoCAD
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • MRP Systems familiarity
  • FEA experience, preferably with Ansys
  • Design automation knowledge (DriveWorks)
  • Strong time management skills and a commitment to meeting project deadlines

CERTIFICATION:

  • Continuous education in CAD software as deemed necessary by management.
  • Continuous education in Configurator Software / MRP systems / design automation systems as deemed necessary by management.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is an office position, although it can also be in the general shop and sometimes outside, and it has access to all welfare facilities. In some cases, the temperature can be warmer or colder depending on the season. Most of the hazards come from machines but following proper procedures should minimize risk. This position will be exposed to the elements and will have to prepare themselves with the right equipment to ensure safety.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires sitting for the majority of the shift but also requires standing and walking. During shifts, some projects require the use of feet, hands, and fingers for over 60 minutes at a time. Depending on the season, different protective apparel will be required. The use of knees, legs, back, shoulders, and arms can vary from 15 minutes to 60 minutes. This position requires reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling to complete job tasks. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus, and good depth perception. All positions require the ability to lift 50 pounds.
