Job description

This position is responsible for directing the development and implementation of athletic and recreation programs for area residents of all ages.

  • Plans and organizes, and directs comprehensive recreation programs for all age groups.
  • Trains, assigns, directs, supervises, and evaluates the work of personnel and volunteers.
  • Oversees recreation programs; registers teams; conducts coaches meetings; approves game schedules; writes correspondence dealing with rescheduled games, tournaments, suspensions, and standings; supervises games on site.
  • Respond to citizen complaints and concerns; provides information concerning programs; speaks to local community and civic groups.
  • Processes and pays invoices for contracted officials.
  • Oversees memberships, calendars, activities and policy compliance.
  • Schedules and evaluates recreation programs and classes.
  • Prepares budgets, requisitions and makes purchases.
  • Prepares and presents detailed reports.
  • Assess registration fees.
  • Performs related duties.
  • Knowledge of budget development and management principles.
  • Knowledge of community recreational activities administration.
  • Knowledge of recreation rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.

    The Director of Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Services assigns work in terms of general instructions. The director spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

    Guidelines include city policies and procedures, the Georgia Recreation Parks Association Athletic Manual, the rules and regulations governing team sports and recreation programs. These guidelines require judgement, selection and interpretation in application.

    • The work consists of varied management, administrative, and supervisory duties. Scheduling contributes to the complexity of the position.
    • The purpose of this position is to direct the cityโ€™s athletic and related recreation programs. Success in this position contributes to the provision of quality recreation programs for area residents of all ages.
    • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, elected and appointed officials, vendors, business leaders, members of the news media, school officials, community leaders, and members of the general public.
    • Contacts are typically to provide services; to give or exchange information; to resolve problems; to motivate or influence persons; or to justify, defend or negotiate matters.
    • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes the sense of smell.
    • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
    • This position has direct supervision over the Athletic Programs Coordinator (1), Program Specialist (3), Administrative Secretary (1), and Administrative Clerk (1).
    • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field or sufficient experience to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service.
    • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driverโ€™s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
    • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or the ability of obtain within 90 Days of hire.
