What are Driver Operations?

Driver Operations refers to the team or function within a company—often in the transportation, delivery, or ride-hailing industries—that manages and supports the drivers who provide the core service. This includes recruiting, onboarding, training, and assisting drivers, as well as ensuring compliance with company policies and local regulations. Driver Operations teams also help optimize driver performance and experience by handling scheduling, addressing concerns, and analyzing operational data to improve efficiency. They play a crucial role in maintaining quality service and supporting the drivers who interact directly with customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Driver Operations professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Driver Operations, you need strong analytical skills, logistical knowledge, and a background in operations management or a related field. Familiarity with fleet management software, route optimization tools, and data analytics platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability help you coordinate effectively with drivers and cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for optimizing driver performance, ensuring efficient operations, and maintaining high service standards.

Can a truck driver make $200,000 a year?

Truck drivers can potentially earn $200,000 annually, especially those with extensive experience, specialized skills, or working in high-paying sectors like oilfield or hazardous materials transportation. Achieving this level of income often requires long hours, overtime, and a strong safety record, along with certifications such as a commercial driver's license (CDL).

What are the main challenges faced in a Driver Operations role, and how can candidates prepare for them?

Driver Operations professionals often manage a variety of responsibilities, including coordinating schedules, supporting drivers, and resolving logistical issues. One common challenge is balancing the needs of drivers with company policies and customer expectations, which requires strong communication and problem-solving skills. Additionally, adapting to fast-paced environments and handling unexpected changes, such as last-minute route adjustments or driver absences, is key. Candidates can prepare by developing organizational skills, being comfortable with technology platforms used for route management, and fostering a collaborative mindset to work effectively with both drivers and cross-functional teams.

Job description

About 8Fleet:
8Fleet is hiring! 8Fleet is a rapidly growing LA-based technology and logistics startup building the operational infrastructure for both autonomous and non-autonomous rideshare fleets. With our anticipated growth, we're searching for a passionate Market Manager to join and grow with our team. You'll be involved in every aspect of operations as we expand rapidly!
About the Role:
The Driver Operations Manager is responsible for owning and improving driver performance within 8Fleet's Los Angeles market. This role is fully focused on analyzing driver data, identifying performance gaps, and turning insights into concrete actions executed by Ops Coordinators on the ground.
You will serve as the connective tissue between driver performance data and the Ops Coordinators who work directly with drivers. This role ensures that what the data says actually shows up in day-to-day conversations, coaching, and execution in the field.
This is a hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable deep in dashboards and performance analyses as they are rolling up their sleeves to solve real operational problems. The ideal candidate is an analytics powerhouse with a strong operator's mindset - someone who will do whatever it takes to improve outcomes, including changing a tire if needed.
You are driven. You are curious. You care deeply about performance - and you take pride in execution.
Key Responsibilities:
Driver Performance Analytics & Insights
  • Own driver-level performance metrics including utilization, online hours, trip quality, acceptance rates, cancellations, reliability, and safety indicators
  • Build, maintain, and improve dashboards and reporting to surface trends and identify underperformance.
  • Analyze driver behavior and performance patterns to identify root causes and improvement opportunities.
  • Clearly translate data insights into actionable recommendations for Ops Coordinators.

Execution Through Ops Coordinators
  • Partner closely with Ops Coordinators to ensure performance insights are effectively communicated to drivers
  • Equip Coordinators with clear talking points, priorities, and follow-ups rooted in data
  • Support and reinforce performance conversations through coaching frameworks and escalation paths
  • Track execution quality and follow-through to ensure data-driven initiatives actually move metrics

On-the-Ground Operational Support
  • Stay closely connected to day-to-day fleet operations to understand real-world constraints behind the data
  • Step in to support operational issues as needed, including driver or vehicle-related problems
  • Lead by example with a hands-on approach to problem-solving and execution

Continuous Improvement & Feedback Loop
  • Monitor the impact of performance initiatives and iterate quickly based on results
  • Surface insights from Ops Coordinators and drivers to refine analytics, targets, and processes
  • Act as a feedback loop between field execution and performance reporting

Successful Candidates Will Bring
  • 2+ years of experience in operations, analytics, logistics, or a similar execution-heavy role
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify patterns, and drive action
  • Experience working with performance metrics, dashboards, and reporting
  • Ability to translate data into clear, actionable guidance for frontline teams
  • Strong ownership mentality and bias toward action
  • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and support operations as needed
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across analytical and operational teams
  • Excellent organization and time management in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with rideshare platforms (Uber, Lyft) or fleet operations is a strong plus

Available full-time, on-site in Los Angeles
