Authorities shut down Dream Market in 2019 as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal online marketplaces.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a market research analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Market Research Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, quantitative knowledge, and typically a bachelor’s degree in marketing, statistics, or a related field. Familiarity with statistical software (such as SPSS, SAS, or Excel), survey tools, and data visualization platforms is crucial. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and attention to detail help analysts interpret data and present actionable insights. These skills enable professionals to accurately assess market trends, support business strategy, and drive organizational growth.

What are some common challenges professionals face when working in digital marketplace management roles?

Professionals managing digital marketplaces often encounter challenges such as balancing the needs of buyers and sellers, ensuring platform security, and staying compliant with evolving industry regulations. They also frequently need to adapt quickly to changes in technology and consumer behavior, which can impact the platform’s features or business model. Effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as marketing, IT, and customer support—are crucial to address these challenges and maintain a competitive, user-friendly marketplace.

About this Position

Revenue management is one of the highest-leverage functions in our business, and this role sits at the center of it. You will read market signals, spot patterns, and make pricing decisions daily, often with incomplete information. This Junior Revenue Analyst position will train directly with our Director of Marketing & Revenue in a proprietary approach to vacation rental pricing developed over years of practice. Think of this as an apprenticeship: you will learn a defined methodology first, apply it with regular feedback, and build real pricing judgment through repetition.

Vacation rental revenue management is a young field, and the people who excel at it are the ones curious enough to pull on a thread until they find the answer. We weigh raw analytical ability, learning speed, and judgment more heavily than prior revenue management experience. This is a strong fit for someone with an interest in business intelligence, marketing analytics, pricing, or data analysis who wants to apply those skills to decisions that move the business.

This is a remote work opportunity in the following approved states: CA, HI, AZ, OR, UT, IL, TN, AR, FL, CO.

Requirements:

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn and execute a proprietary revenue management strategy across a portfolio of 450+ vacation rental listings
  • Monitor pricing, availability, booking pace, occupancy trends, and market signals daily
  • Analyze competitive positioning and identify pricing opportunities
  • Make real-time pricing optimization decisions with guidance from the Director of Marketing & Revenue
  • Actively interpret the data: notice patterns, raise questions, and make judgment calls rather than simply reporting what the dashboard shows
  • Build and maintain reports that surface the signals that matter and filter out the noise
  • Develop pricing intuition through direct mentorship and repeated decision-making
  • Become the internal expert on revenue management tools, channel dynamics, and platform mechanics

Skills & Competencies

  • Analytical depth: comfortable working in data for extended stretches in pursuit of a specific answer
  • Probabilistic thinking: able to make a sound call without perfect information and recalibrate quickly as new data arrives
  • Pattern recognition: distinguishes meaningful signal from noise across pricing, pace, and market data
  • Technical fluency: learns new software quickly, builds reports independently, and uses AI tools to work more efficiently
  • Coachability: learns an established methodology thoroughly before adapting it, asks good questions, and applies feedback quickly
  • Accuracy and ownership: understands that small pricing decisions compound across a large portfolio and takes care accordingly
  • Clear communication: can explain the reasoning behind a pricing decision to a non-analyst

Relationships & Reporting

  • Reports directly to the Director of Marketing & Revenue
  • Works in close, consistent partnership with the Director, who provides daily direction, mentorship, and feedback
  • Although the role is fully remote, it is a highly connected one. You will be available and responsive during Pacific Time business hours.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated analytical ability, whether from professional work, academic study, research, investing, or technical side projects
  • Comfort working with messy, real-world data
  • Availability and responsiveness during business hours
  • Reliable high-speed internet and a suitable remote work environment
  • This role may be required to travel to one of our operating locations on occasion for in person meetups.
  • Candidates must be physically located in one of the following states:  CA, HI, AZ, OR, UT, IL, TN, AR, FL, CO

Preferred qualifications

  • College degree and/or 1 year of experience in business intelligence, marketing analytics, data analysis, pricing, finance, economics, or another quantitative field.
  • Familiarity with concepts like signal vs. noise, expected value, or probabilistic modeling, whether developed through analytics, finance or forecasting.
  • Early-career candidates, career changers, and recent graduates with demonstrated analytical ability are encouraged to apply.

Who You Are

  • You are the person who cannot leave an unanswered question alone. You like puzzles and you follow threads until they resolve.
  • You are excited to be taught. You want to learn a proven methodology deeply, and you see structure and feedback as the fastest path to becoming excellent, rather than a constraint on your creativity.
  • You are low ego and high ownership. You care about getting it right, you take feedback seriously, and you own the outcome of your decisions.
  • You are energized by real business impact. You want your analysis to change what happens, not just populate a report.
