Downstream Process information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in downstream process roles?

Professionals in downstream process roles often encounter challenges such as optimizing purification steps to maximize yield and product purity while minimizing costs and processing time. They must also troubleshoot issues related to equipment performance, scalability, and regulatory compliance, especially when transitioning from lab-scale to large-scale production. Collaboration with upstream teams, quality assurance, and engineering is critical to address these challenges and ensure a smooth workflow. Staying current with technological advances and regulatory requirements also plays a significant role in day-to-day success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a downstream process engineer?

To thrive as a Downstream Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or biochemical engineering, knowledge of purification techniques, and typically a relevant degree. Familiarity with process control systems, chromatography, filtration technologies, and GMP compliance, as well as certifications like Six Sigma, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you excel in cross-functional teams and address complex production challenges. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality product recovery and compliance with industry standards in biomanufacturing environments.

What is the difference between Downstream Process vs Upstream Process?

AspectDownstream ProcessUpstream Process
PurposePurifies and isolates the target product from the mixtureProduces the initial product, such as cell culture or fermentation
ActivitiesFiltration, chromatography, centrifugation, purificationCell growth, fermentation, media preparation
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, bioprocessing facilitiesBioreactors, fermentation tanks, labs
Required SkillsBioprocessing techniques, chromatography, filtrationMicrobiology, cell culture, fermentation technology

Downstream Process focuses on purifying the product, while Upstream Process involves producing the raw material. Both are essential steps in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, often working sequentially to ensure high-quality product output.

What is a downstream process?

A Downstream Process refers to the series of steps involved in the purification and recovery of biological products, such as proteins, enzymes, or antibodies, after they have been produced by microorganisms or cells during fermentation or cell culture. It typically includes cell separation, product isolation, purification, and polishing to achieve the desired product quality and purity. Downstream processing is crucial for ensuring that biopharmaceutical products meet regulatory and safety standards before they reach the market.

Quality Architect

Chghealthcare

Job description

Healthcare's helping hand.
CHG shook things up in 1979 by inventing the locum tenens staffing model. We connect doctors with patients who need their care. As the largest physician staffing firm in America, our providers treat millions of patients each year.
Our industry is growing and demand is high. This means you'll have plenty of opportunities to grow and develop in your career. Keeping healthcare healthy can be as fun as it is rewarding

CHG Healthcare is building an AI-Forward Enterprise End-To-End Testing function that validates critical business workflows across an integrated enterprise landscape. The Quality Architect is responsible for designing the architecture, standards and tooling that enable AI-assisted test execution and infrastructure needed for the validation of complete business processes and integrations that span multiple internal and external systems, applications, and teams - from initiation to final outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Architect quality solutions that support multi-system, cross-domain E2E scenarios across CHG's enterprise integrations, and downstream platforms.
  • Define and maintain an enterprise testing roadmap.
  • Evaluate and recommend quality tooling and platforms, with a bias toward solutions that integrate with AI-assisted test generation and autonomous execution pipelines.
  • Define data quality standards for test datasets - referential integrity, coverage requirements, and edge-case representation - so that AI-generated test scenarios have the data fidelity to produce trustworthy results.
  • Actively shape how AI capabilities are applied to quality solutions: LLM-assisted scenario generation from structured workflow inputs, agentic test runners, and AI-synthesized execution reporting.
  • Stay current on tooling relevant to quality engineering, autonomous test execution, intelligent defect categorization, observability integrations, and bring concrete recommendations to the team.
  • Work with cross functional teams to design test data pipelines that support autonomous regression execution, enabling the team to scale coverage.
  • Design AI-augmented quality intelligence: ensuring the quality architecture supports defect pattern analysis, risk flagging, and release readiness recommendations that can be acted on.
  • Engage the enterprise architecture team, bring quality architecture into system design conversations early, and advocate for testability as a first-class design concern.
  • Build and maintain data visibility across CHG's cross-system business workflows enabling test validation to trace a record from the source system through every downstream handoff and confirm data integrity at each point.
  • Maintain the impact assessment process when the source system schemas change and ensure test data catalogs and integration scenarios remain valid.
  • Partner with the platform engineering team on environment architecture, CI/CD pipeline integration, and infrastructure provisioning for testing at scale.
  • Develop and publish quality standards, reusable patterns, and self-service provisioning capabilities that teams across CHG can adopt consistently.
  • Build and maintain centralized test data catalogs that reduce manual data setup and accelerate coverage for new integration scenarios.
  • Represent the E2E testing practice in cross-functional forums: architecture reviews, platform planning sessions, security councils, and release readiness discussions.
  • Define and enforce load testing standards across the organization.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years in software engineering, data engineering, or quality engineering - with at least 3 years focused on quality management or data architecture in enterprise environments.
  • Demonstrated experience designing testing solutions across complex, multi-system integrations.
  • Hands-on experience with relational databases, APIs, and data provisioning in CI/CD contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience designing synthetic test data pipelines for environments where production datacannot be used directly.
  • Security engineering awareness - understands access controls, audit requirements, and data identification in non-production systems.
  • Experience engaging architecture, platform engineering, or security teams as a technical peer and collaborator.
  • Familiarity with AI and automation tooling in a quality engineering or data engineering context.
  • Ability to influence technical direction across teams without direct authority - through standards, architecture, and credibility.
  • Ability to communicate quality technical architecture decisions to diverse audiences through documentation, and standards that teams can act on.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with Salesforce, Workday, or enterprise SaaS platforms as testing targets.
  • Experience with LLM-assisted test generation, agentic test execution, or AI-augmented quality intelligence tooling.
  • Background in microservices, event-driven architecture, or API-layer integration testing.
  • Experience working in an agile, squad-based engineering model.
