The Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS) is looking for Term Animal Caretaker Positions (WG-5048-06) to work in 341st Training Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX.
The purpose of this position is to perform as a kennel attendant in the Kennel Operations Flight and to care for and handle Military Working Dogs (MWD) at 341st Training Squadron (341 TRS), Logistics Flight, in the most effective and humane manner in accordance with existing organizational and regulatory procedures.

Salary Range is $48,167 - $56,182 Annually based on experience.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION
• U.S. Citizenship
• This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
• The incumbent must work rotational shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays, as duty requires.
• The incumbent is subject to scratches, bites, parasites, unpleasant odors, and loud noises. Incumbent must have spleen.
• The incumbent must have and maintain a civilian driver's license and be able to obtain and maintain a military driver's license. Incumbent is required to operate motor vehicles to transport dogs to medical appointments, emergency medical care, and to transfer them between kennel facilities. Incumbent can be tasked to operate quads, 4x2 vehicles, and 4x4
• vehicles, to include towing dog trailers, and forklifts.
• The duties of this position meets all requirements as a category 4 designation, and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization without seriously impairing the capability of the parent Federal Agency or office to function effectively. This position must be removed from the Ready Reserve and CAN NOT become a member of the Ready Reserve. (IAW: DoDD 1200.7, "Screening the Ready Reserve,").
• Incumbent must be physically and mentally able to handle adverse conditions, to include adverse weather conditions and adverse conditions in the maintenance and cleaning of kennels and must be able to lift 100 pounds with assistance. These items include dogs, equipment, and supplies.
• The incumbent must be able to work with other animal caretakers in support of the 341 TRS MWD program.
• Knowledge of effective, feeding, grooming, and exercising large animals (working dogs preferred).
• Knowledge of effective facility sanitation to prevent injury and illness in program animals.
• Ability to provide care for large animals according to specific schedules and routine methods.
• Ability to clean and maintain facilities housing large animals to maintain their health and welfare.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing, and to work harmoniously with personnel and supervisors.
• Ability to catch, handle, hold, and transfer large animals without injuring the animal or endangering self or others.
• Ability to apply knowledge of the normal appearance and activities of large animals to recognize obvious changes such as excessive loss of fur, fighting, refusal to feed, malaise, etc.
• Ability to perform a variety of tasks to provide physical, social, cognitive, and sensory enrichment to large animals.
