The Dodge YMCA isseeking a Youth Coach/Trainer who will be responsible for leading a group or team of children/teensand teaching them progressive skill development in a designated sport.ย TheYouth Coach/Trainer will promote the enjoyment of sports while improvingphysical competence, developing confidence, teaching healthy competition, andskill development.ย The overall major functions of the Youth Coach/Traineralso include:

  • Provide a fun, safe, and positive experience for all participants.
  • Demonstrate strong service and hospitality with all constituents, including, but not limited to, program participants and parents/guardians.
  • Create an all-inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Teach progressive lessons and provide opportunities to demonstrate learned skills.
  • Encourage a lifetime of participation in sports and physical activity.
  • Coach games that allow for equal playing time.
  • Be responsible for the team's equipment.
  • Work to establish and improve group unity and spirit.
  • Be available on Saturday evenings for the program.
  • Embody the YMCA Core Values.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives, goals, and logistics.
  • Schedule team practices and games during Saturday Night Lights (SNL) Teen Center hours in collaboration with Teen Advisors.
  • Create written plans for all practices that are age-appropriate and progressive, as needed.ย ย 
  • Provide supervision of the players to ensure safety and engagement.
  • Be able to modify and adapt coaching styles to meet the needs of the participants.
  • Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship over winning and the outcome of the game.
  • Teach rules and fundamentals and enhance basic skills.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding schedules.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them and/or their child/teen.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding the progress of their child/teen and registration.
  • Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition.ย This includes conducting scheduled equipment safety checks.
  • Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.
  • When applicable, provide direction to volunteers or Teen Advisors who are supporting the program.
  • Inform the Manager on Duty (MOD) of any incident reports that need to be filled out.
  • Actively participate in designated meetings, training sessions, and special events.
  • Adhere to all Saturday Night Lights (SNL) funding expectations and requirements.
  • Keep a safe and clean activity space.
  • May be required to perform other duties/related tasks as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

DesiredSkills & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalentrequired.
  • Minimum of two (2) yearsof experience coaching children/teens sports in a structured setting.ย Experience working with teens in a group setting.
  • Coaching license in therespective sport preferred.
  • Current First Aid or CPRcertifications.
  • Must attend theย YMCA Coaching 101 Training within ninety (90) days of hire.
  • Must receive theย CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Must receive theย Child Abuse Prevention certificate within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Passion for youth development and knowledge of youth development stages.
  • Content expert in the designated sport(s).
  • In-depth knowledge of sporting strategies.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.ย Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
  • Must beavailable to work Saturday evenings.
