Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

MYR Group and its subsidiaries are proud to support the successful transition of active-duty military service members into civilian careers. Through participation in the Department of Defense (DoD) SkillBridge Program, eligible service members gain valuable civilian work experience during the final months of military service. The MYR Group SkillBridge Internship provides transitioning service members with hands-on exposure to the electrical construction industry, offering insight into how complex infrastructure projects are planned, executed, and delivered safely and efficiently. SkillBridge participants will work alongside experienced professionals, develop industry-specific skills, and gain real-world experience that can support long-term career opportunities in construction, engineering, operations, logistics, safety, and corporate support functions.

SkillBridge internships are unpaid and conducted in accordance with DoD SkillBridge program guidelines. Participants continue to receive military pay and benefits through their branch of service. MYR Group does not provide salary, health benefits, PTO, or holiday pay during the internship. Participation in the internship does not guarantee employment, but serves as a potential pathway for future career opportunities within MYR Group.

This internship is exclusively available to candidates approved for participation in the DOD SkillBridge Program.

Company Overview

Established in 2015, Sturgeon Electric California, LLC (Sturgeon Electric California) – a subsidiary of MYR Group Inc. – provides a full range of electrical contracting capabilities related to transmission, distribution, transportation, and clean energy construction. Our management team has vast experience in the California electrical construction industry and is a proud signatory member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

Our transportation, transmission and distribution, and clean energy divisions operate out of a central location in Chino. A Bakersfield office serves clients throughout central California.

Depending on business needs and the participant’s experience and interests, SkillBridge interns may support one of several operational or corporate functions within MYR Group. These may include:

SkillBridge Safety Professional

Essential Functions

    • Leverage military safety experience to support jobsite safety programs, compliance initiatives, inspections, and training.
    • Assist with safety documentation, hazard identification, and continuous improvement of safety practices.
    • Particiapte  in field and administrative safety functions supporting electrical utility construction operations.
    • Gain experience in hazard identification, energy-based safety principles, safety observations, incident prevention, and safety systems (QuickBase and Vector) while working alongside field leadership and safety professionals.
    • Participate in daily field safety activities including job brief observations, tailboard reviews, and verification of hazard identification and mitigation using energy-based safety principles.
    • Support incident prevention efforts through participation in field audits, Human Performance (HOP) application, and learning teams focused on identifying error-likely situations.
    • Support the organization, tracking, and documentation of equipment and PPE, including verification of inspection and test dates and general condition.

Qualifications

  • DoD SkillBridge Eligibility Requirements
    • To participate, candidates must meet all DoD SkillBridge requirements, including:
      • Have 180 days or fewer remaining prior to military discharge
      • Receive written authorization and approval from their unit commander
      • Acknowledge that participation may be terminated by the military due to mission requirements
      • Maintain a valid driver’s license
      • Internship start and end dates must be coordinated between the participant’s command and MYR Group
    • Program Length
      • The MYR Group SkillBridge Internship is designed to align with DoD SkillBridge program guidelines, allowing eligible service members to participate during the final 180 days of active-duty service.
      • Typical internship length: 4 to 26 weeks
      • Start and end dates are coordinated between the service member, their command, and MYR Group
      • Participants will work a schedule similar to a full-time employee during the internship to maximize hands-on learning and industry exposure
    • Specific placement locations will be determined based on:
      • Participant location and relocation capability
      • Military command approval
      • Business needs and role availability
      • Alignment between the participant’s military experience and internship opportunity
      • Some positions may be office-based, while others may involve field or project site environments within the electrical construction industry
  • Relocation assistance is not provided during the SkillBridge internship.

Preferred Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
