What does a document review attorney do?

The primary duty of a document review attorney is to evaluate documents for other lawyers, reviewing and analyzing data to determine whether or not the records are relevant to a particular case. As a document review attorney, your responsibilities include highlighting and finding pertinent information that may need to be processed for use in court. You also work with electronic databases that can review documents faster and narrow down the number of pages that need to be read and studied. Law firms employ document review attorneys to examine documents and records for cases with a high volume of papers from discovery.

What does a document review attorney do?

A Document Review Attorney is a legal professional responsible for analyzing documents relevant to a case or investigation, often as part of the discovery process in litigation. Their main tasks include reviewing emails, contracts, and other documents to identify privileged, confidential, or responsive information. They help ensure that only appropriate documents are disclosed to opposing parties and that sensitive information is protected. Document review attorneys often use specialized software and work in teams, especially on large cases involving substantial amounts of data.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a document review attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Document Review Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, an active law license, and a keen understanding of litigation and legal terminology. Familiarity with e-discovery platforms like Relativity, Concordance, or Logikcull is typically required, along with proficiency in document management systems. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and the ability to work efficiently under deadlines are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate, timely identification of relevant case information while maintaining compliance with legal standards and client expectations.

What are some common challenges faced by document review attorneys, and how can they be managed effectively?

Document Review Attorneys often face the challenge of managing large volumes of documents within tight deadlines, which can lead to long hours and repetitive tasks. Maintaining accuracy while quickly identifying relevant information is crucial, as errors can impact the outcome of a case. Adopting strong organizational skills, utilizing advanced review software, and regularly communicating with team members can help manage these challenges effectively. Additionally, staying current with best practices in e-discovery can improve efficiency and job satisfaction.

Salary: $180,000 - $200,000 per year
A bit about us:
---------
Our client is a well established Delaware law firm with a history stretching back more than 130 years. The firm is widely recognized as a leader in Delaware corporate and business law, with deep experience representing both public and private companies in high stakes corporate governance disputes, stockholder litigation, and complex business transactions.
The firm regularly serves as lead counsel in complex and expedited litigation before the Delaware Court of Chancery and other state courts, and its attorneys have argued and won landmark cases shaping the development of Delaware corporate law. While the firm handles matters on par with those of the nation's largest law firms, it maintains a moderate size, allowing every attorney to work closely and directly with clients rather than being buried within a large institutional hierarchy.
The firm's offices are located in a historic building in downtown Wilmington, within walking distance of the Delaware Court of Chancery, and it maintains international reach through affiliation with a global network of independent law firms.
Why join us?
---------
Work on matters that matter. Attorneys here are regularly involved in some of the most significant and closely watched corporate litigation in the country, including disputes over mergers, stockholder rights, and fiduciary duties of officers and directors.
Real responsibility, real early. Because the firm is not oversized, attorneys get hands on experience and direct client contact much earlier in their careers than they typically would at a larger firm.
A legacy of influence. Many alumni of the firm have gone on to serve on the Delaware judiciary, including at the Delaware Supreme Court and Court of Chancery, and current attorneys are active in shaping the rules and practices that govern Delaware corporate law.
Collegial, not corporate. The firm's leadership takes a hands on, mentorship oriented approach, prioritizing the development of each attorney rather than treating associates as replaceable staff.
Stability with ambition. With over a century of continuous operation, the firm offers rare institutional stability while continuing to pursue sophisticated, cutting edge litigation work.
Job Details
---------
J.D. from an accredited law school
Active license to practice law in Delaware (or eligibility for admission)
Several years of experience in business or commercial litigation, ideally including matters involving corporate governance, fiduciary duty claims, stockholder disputes, or business valuation/appraisal actions
Experience litigating in the Delaware Court of Chancery or other Delaware courts strongly preferred
Strong academic credentials and superior legal writing and research skills
Demonstrated experience handling matters through motion practice, discovery, trial, and/or appeal
Ability to manage substantial responsibility on complex matters while working directly and collaboratively with clients
Excellent judgment, discretion, and communication skills, with a track record of working effectively as part of a team
