To excel as a Doctor of Optometry, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure, and strong knowledge of vision science and ocular health. Familiarity with diagnostic instruments, electronic health records (EHRs), and vision testing software is typically required. What is a Doctor of Optometry?

A Doctor of Optometry (OD) is a healthcare professional who specializes in eye and vision care. Optometrists are trained to examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system and associated structures. They prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses, provide vision therapy, and can detect systemic conditions that affect the eyes, such as diabetes and hypertension. Unlike ophthalmologists, optometrists do not perform major eye surgeries but may provide pre- and post-operative care.
