What is a doctor of optometry?

A Doctor of Optometry (OD) is a healthcare professional who specializes in eye and vision care. Optometrists are trained to examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system and associated structures. They prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses, provide vision therapy, and can detect systemic conditions that affect the eyes, such as diabetes and hypertension. Unlike ophthalmologists, optometrists do not perform major eye surgeries but may provide pre- and post-operative care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a doctor of optometry?

To excel as a Doctor of Optometry, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure, and strong knowledge of vision science and ocular health. Familiarity with diagnostic instruments, electronic health records (EHRs), and vision testing software is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and patient education abilities help build trust and ensure effective care. These competencies ensure accurate diagnoses, successful treatment outcomes, and strong patient relationships in a clinical environment.

What are some common challenges faced by doctors of optometry in managing patient care and practice operations?

Doctors of Optometry often balance clinical responsibilities with administrative tasks, such as patient scheduling, insurance paperwork, and maintaining accurate health records. One frequent challenge is staying current with advances in eye care technology and treatment protocols, while ensuring patient education and compliance. In group or private practices, optometrists also collaborate closely with opticians, ophthalmologists, and support staff, which requires strong communication and teamwork skills. Managing high patient volumes and diverse cases can be demanding, but it also offers valuable opportunities for professional growth and specialization.

Job description

Optometrist Opportunity | Boutique Optical Practice with Ophthalmology Collaboration | Flexible Schedule Options

An established ophthalmology group in the Tacoma metro area is seeking an optometrist to join their team and provide care within a beloved, long-standing boutique optical practice in University Place, WA. This unique opportunity combines the personalized atmosphere of an independent optical with the support, referral network, and clinical collaboration of an established ophthalmology practice.

Unlike many start-up opportunities, this is not a cold start position. The incoming doctor will step into an established patient base within a highly respected optical business that has served the community for more than 50 years. The practice has long been home to independent optometrists, creating an immediate opportunity to build upon existing patient relationships and community trust.

The optometrist will primarily practice within the boutique optical location, providing a balanced mix of routine vision care and medical optometry, including annual diabetic eye exams and management of common ocular conditions. In addition to the optical location, the provider will spend approximately a half-day each week within the affiliated ophthalmology practice assisting with post-operative care and dry eye management. The ophthalmology team is committed to maintaining strong internal referral relationships, creating an environment that offers both collaboration and significant clinical autonomy.

The ophthalmology clinic is a physician-owned ophthalmology practice in Gig Harbor, Washington. Their practice is built around thoughtful, thorough, and personalized eye care. They are a small, dynamic private practice that values clinical excellence, compassion, innovation, and an exceptional patient experience. They are looking for an Optometrist who shares that same commitment to patients, teamwork, and high-quality outcomes.

Schedule Options
  • Traditional schedule: Five days per week seeing approximately 10 patients per day.
  • Condensed schedule: Three days per week seeing approximately 20 patients per day, typically following a Thursday-Saturday schedule.
  • Saturday coverage is required at minimum every other week, regardless of schedule.
  • Approximately one half-day per week will be spent in the affiliated ophthalmology clinic providing post-operative and dry eye care.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Productivity-based compensation model with strong earning potential
  • Potential daily guarantee depending on experience
  • Health benefits, PTO, holidays, and professional development support may be available depending on schedule and employment status
  • Opportunity to grow a longstanding optometric practice with a new ophthalmology-supported presence within an established community optical
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctor of Optometry degree (O.D.)
  • Valid license to practice optometry in Washington, or ability to obtain
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is clinically strong, personable, dependable, and comfortable practicing both independently and collaboratively. This opportunity is particularly well suited for an optometrist who enjoys developing long-term patient relationships and wants to be part of a growing private practice environment. This position is ideal for a doctor who enjoys relationship-based care and values quality patient interactions over high-volume scheduling. The practice culture emphasizes thoughtful, personalized care and long-term patient relationships rather than a rushed or transactional experience.
