Position Overview
Gene By Gene is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to work within the Core department to assist with DNA extraction, sample management, general organization, and maintenance of the area.
Accountabilities and Responsibilities
Sample Management-40%
  • Responsible for sample management and tracking through the department, including working with the sample sorter and the automated storage system for sorting, storage, and retrieval of extracted samples.
  • Assists with general department tasks, including manual sample racking and scanning, sample fixes, operation of the automated vial filler, operation of the autoclave, etc.
  • Assists with other laboratory teams and procedures as necessary, including receipt and accessioning of samples when needed.

DNA Extraction-40%
  • Under supervision, works with automated liquid handlers and other automation to assist with daily extraction of DNA from incoming laboratory samples.
  • Follows all laboratory procedures and policies, including quality control and quality system activities, and documents appropriately all records, deviations, and corrective actions as required.

Administration and organization-20%
  • Monitors and maintains supply inventories.
  • Performs general laboratory maintenance, organization, and cleaning of the area.
  • Maintains documentation of department activities as required.

Position Requirements
Technical Skills & Accuracy:
  • Strong computer proficiency with fast and accurate data entry skills.
  • High attention to detail with a proven track record of maintaining exceptional accuracy during repetitive, routine tasks.
  • Demonstrated capability in sample management, including safely handling, labeling, sorting, and logging specimens according to strict protocols.

Core Competencies & Execution:
  • Strong comprehension skills with the ability to quickly learn, understand, and implement complex operational instructions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision once trained, while maintaining high productivity.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) for collaborating with team members and documenting discrepancies.
  • Professional Integrity.
  • High level of integrity and trustworthiness, with a strict commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and data security (HIPAA compliance).
  • Reliability in attendance and task execution.

Experience
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Associates degree or college level coursework in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • At least 1 year experience in a laboratory environment preferred.
