CredentialsNone required, but DJ-specific training or certifications can helpMusic production courses, audio engineering certifications
Work EnvironmentClubs, events, radio stations, festivalsRecording studios, home studios, production companies
Industry UsagePerforming live, mixing tracks for audiencesCreating, composing, and producing original music

While both DJs and music producers work with music, DJs primarily perform live by mixing existing tracks for audiences, often in clubs or events. Although their skills overlap, their roles differ in environment and output, with DJs emphasizing live performance and producers concentrating on music creation.

What is a DJ?

A DJ, or Disc Jockey, plays music and provides entertainment for people, either on the radio or at an event. As a Radio DJ, your responsibilities and duties include monitoring the playback during your show and speaking live on-the-air between songs. On-Air DJs conduct interviews, promote events, and hold contests. An Event or Nightclub DJ usually serves as the announcer or master of ceremonies (emcee) while playing a lineup of music. Talents may also include managing digital audio and visual production equipment and turntables to create music remixes. Regardless of the type of DJ you are, you must have an outgoing personality, a love and knowledge of a wide range of music, and a proficiency in digital sound equipment and software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DJ, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DJ, you need a strong sense of musical timing, genre knowledge, and experience with audio mixing, often supported by hands-on practice or formal training. Familiarity with DJ software (like Serato or Traktor), professional DJ controllers, and sound systems is typically required. Outstanding crowd-reading ability, adaptability, and strong communication skills help DJs engage audiences and collaborate with event teams. These skills are essential for creating memorable experiences, maintaining high energy, and ensuring technical excellence in live settings.

How does a DJ typically collaborate with event coordinators and other performers during live events?

DJs work closely with event coordinators and other performers to ensure seamless event flow and a cohesive atmosphere. Before an event, they may meet with organizers to discuss the schedule, preferred musical genres, and special requests. During the event, DJs often coordinate with emcees, lighting technicians, and live performers to synchronize music with announcements or performances. Effective communication and adaptability are essential, as DJs must adjust their sets in real time based on audience reactions and event dynamics.

Job description

PRML Motivator - Calgary (17th Ave)

Hot. Cold. Human.

PRML is Rumble Boxing's sister wellness brand - a music-driven, social contrast therapy club built around guided sauna and cold plunge sessions. We're looking for Guides who bring presence, music, and energy to lead our signature flows.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Lead PRML guided classes with energy, clarity, and a strong feel for the room

Curate and build 2-3 track lists / musical journeys per week in line with PRML's guidelines

Arrive 30 minutes early to welcome members and build relationships before and after class

Use your social media presence and personal brand to help grow your following and PRML's

Support membership sales and post-class conversions

Attend all mandatory Guide training and development sessions

Help grow the PRML community beyond the studio by bringing your own network in

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

A performer at heart - dance, music, acting, or DJ background; you command a room and make people feel something

You have the 'IT factor' - a natural spark that makes people want to come back for you

A community builder with an existing network of people who show up for you

Music is your first language - you can read a track, build a set, and use music to move a room

You can hold a room and read its energy, adjusting pace and presence in real time

Coachable - no teaching experience required, but you take direction and improve fast

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

No teaching or group fitness experience required

Performance background strongly preferred (dancer, musician, actor, DJ, host, or similar)

An existing audience, network, or community is a major asset

Willingness to be trained and held to PRML's format and standards

WHY PEOPLE LOVE WORKING HERE

Competitive class-based pay

Flexible scheduling

Free PRML sessions

Opportunity to grow within the Rumble/PRML brand family

Ongoing training and development

High-energy team culture

THE VIBE

This isn't a typical wellness studio - it's clubbing, but make it wellness. PRML is community, contrast therapy, curated music, and connection. If you naturally bring energy into a room, you'll fit right in.
