Job description

Job ID:  523599

CRH's Americas Materials division is the leading integrated supplier of aggregates, asphalt, ready mixed concrete and paving and construction services in North America. Our operations span North America with over 29,000 employees at close to 1,660 locations in 45 US States and 2 Canadian provinces.

Position Overview

The Vice President, Strategy & Development is responsible for leading inorganic growth and major growth capital initiatives for the South Central Division of CRH Americas Materials. This role partners closely with the Division President and division leadership team to identify, evaluate, and execute acquisitions, greenfields, and other strategic growth investments that strengthen the divisionโ€™s competitive position and longโ€‘term value creation.

The role leads the endโ€‘toโ€‘end lifecycle for M&A and major growth Capex, from opportunity identification and valuation through transaction execution and postโ€‘close integration enablement. While operating leadership retains full ownership of acquired businesses and execution of required standards, this role provides structure, coordination, and rigor to ensure integrations are wellโ€‘planned, appropriately paced, and aligned to the original investment thesis.

The VP balances disciplined capital allocation, repeatable growth processes, and strong crossโ€‘functional collaboration with the divisionโ€™s core beliefs in local empowerment, operational excellence, and safetyโ€‘first execution.

Key Responsibilities

Inorganic Growth (M&A)

  • Lead acquisition activity within the South Central Division, including:
  • Market and portfolio analysis
  • Target identification and relationship development
  • Strategic fit and investment thesis development
  • Own financial modeling, valuation, and return analysis for acquisition opportunities, delivering clear, dataโ€‘driven recommendations to division and AMAT leadership.
  • Coordinate comprehensive due diligence across operations, finance, legal, environmental, safety, commercial, and cultural dimensions.
  • Support transaction structuring, negotiations, and closing in partnership with Business Leadership, Legal, Finance, and AMAT Strategy & Development.
  • Maintain an active, prioritized pipeline of acquisition opportunities aligned with divisional strategy and capital allocation priorities.

Growth Capex & Greenfield Investments

  • Identify, evaluate and prioritize major growth capital and greenfield opportunities that:
  • Expand the divisionโ€™s footprint
  • Improve supply chain resilience and connectivity
  • Strengthen technical, operational, or market capabilities
  • Partner with operations, commercial, technical services, and supply chain leaders to develop robust business cases, execution plans, and risk assessments.
  • Lead preparation and presentation of growthโ€‘Capex proposals through appropriate approval channels, ranging from AMAT leadership to CEO and Board level depending on investment size and scope.
  • Track performance of major growth investments relative to original objectives and expected returns.

Integration Enablement & Value Realization (Supportive Role)

  • Serve as the integration architect and coordinator, ensuring each acquisition or greenfield investment has a clear, disciplined integration plan aligned to the approved investment thesis and value creation objectives.
  • Partner with operations leadership as the owners of integration execution, supporting them with structure, sequencing, coordination, and visibility while respecting local authority and accountability.
  • Establish and maintain a consistent integration framework, including:
  • Preโ€‘close integration planning
  • Dayโ€‘1 readiness
  • Firstโ€‘100โ€‘day priorities
  • Clearly defined milestones tied to value realization
  • Facilitate crossโ€‘functional coordination (operations, finance, HR, IT, commercial) to ensure integration efforts remain aligned, risks are surfaced early, and decisions are made in a timely manner.
  • Support operating teams in evaluating integration tradeoffs and pacing decisionsโ€”what must be done immediately versus what can be phasedโ€”without displacing their ownership of outcomes.
  • Provide visibility and transparency of integration progress, risks, and value realization through structured reporting and regular leadership updates.
  • Act as a problemโ€‘solver and escalation point, facilitating resolution and escalating unresolved issues to division leadership when required.
  • Reinforce required divisional and corporate standards by partnering with operating teams, recognizing that adoption, compliance, and execution are owned by line leadershipโ€”not the Strategy & Development function.
  • Capture lessons learned and continuously refine integration tools, templates, and playbooks to improve the effectiveness of future integrations.

Strategic Partnership & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as a trusted thought partner to the Division President and leadership team on portfolio strategy, market dynamics, and growth priorities.
  • Work closely with AMAT Strategy & Development, Finance, Legal, and peer divisions to align on growth strategy, governance, and execution discipline.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with acquisition targets, owners, brokers, investment bankers, and advisors across the South Central footprint.
  • Prepare highโ€‘quality executiveโ€‘ and boardโ€‘level materials to support investment approvals and strategic discussions.

Team Leadership & Capability Building

  • Lead and develop a small Strategy & Development team supporting deal execution, analysis, and integration enablement.
  • Build repeatable processes, tools, and templates for M&A, growth Capex, and integration planning to increase speed, consistency, and decision quality.
  • Coach and support crossโ€‘functional leaders during transactions and integrations, reinforcing collaboration, accountability, and confidence through periods of change.

Success Measures

Performance in this role will be measured by:

  • Strength, quality, and discipline of the acquisition and growthโ€‘Capex pipeline
  • Sound capital allocation decisions and return performance relative to original deal or investment thesis
  • Wellโ€‘planned integrations that minimize disruption and support effective value realization
  • Clear, credible communication with division, AMAT, executive, and boardโ€‘level stakeholders
  • Development of sustainable, repeatable growth and integration capabilities within the division

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree required; MBA or advanced degree strongly preferred
  • 7 or more years of progressive experience in corporate development, investment banking, consulting, private equity, or related strategy roles
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex transactions and crossโ€‘functional initiatives
  • Industry experience in construction materials, aggregates, readyโ€‘mix, asphalt, or heavy industrial sectors preferred but not required

Skills & Leadership Attributes

  • Strong financial modeling, valuation, and analytical capabilities
  • Ability to lead through ambiguity and influence across multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including executiveโ€‘ and boardโ€‘level presentations
  • High integrity, sound judgment, and strong accountability
  • Actionโ€‘oriented, pragmatic, and respectful of operational realities
  • Strong people leadership, coaching, and teamโ€‘building skills

Travel & Work Environment

  • Approximately 30% travel, with higher levels during active transactions or major investment phases
  • Primarily officeโ€‘based with frequent site visits across the South Central Division
  • May require work outside standard business hours during critical deal periods

What CRH Offers You

  • Highly competitive base pay
  • Comprehensive medical, dental and disability benefits programs
  • Group retirement savings program
  • Health and wellness programs
  • An inclusive culture that values opportunity for growth, development, and internal promotion
