Diversity Inclusion information

What are some common challenges faced in a Diversity and Inclusion position, and how are they typically addressed?

One common challenge in Diversity and Inclusion roles is overcoming resistance to change and addressing unconscious bias within the organization. Professionals in this field often address these issues through ongoing education, tailored training programs, and by facilitating open dialogues that engage staff at all levels. Another challenge is measuring the impact of D&I initiatives, which is typically managed through careful data collection and analysis to inform future strategies. Successful practitioners are proactive collaborators, working with leadership, HR, and employee resource groups to create actionable plans that foster sustainable inclusion. By anticipating these challenges and working closely across teams, you can help advance meaningful progress within the organization.

What is a Diversity Inclusion job?

A Diversity Inclusion job focuses on creating and promoting policies, programs, and initiatives that foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. Professionals in these roles work to ensure that employees from all backgrounds feel valued, respected, and have equal opportunities for growth. They often collaborate with HR, leadership, and employee resource groups to drive organizational change through training, hiring practices, and community outreach.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Diversity Inclusion position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Diversity and Inclusion role, you should have a solid understanding of equity practices, organizational change management, and cultural competency, often supported by degrees in human resources, social sciences, or related fields. Familiarity with diversity analytics tools, HRIS systems, and certifications like the Certified Diversity Professional (CDP) are valuable assets. Outstanding soft skills include strong communication, emotional intelligence, and the ability to facilitate difficult conversations across different departments. These skills are essential for effectively driving inclusive initiatives and fostering a workplace culture where everyone feels valued and engaged.

Job description

Description
The Marsal School of Education at the University of Michigan seeks to appoint a tenure track faculty member at the assistant, associate, or full professor rank in early literacy.
We invite applicants whose scholarship focuses on early literacy education (early childhood, preschool, or primary grades) and whose research contributes to knowledge in the areas of teacher preparation, policy, and/or curriculum and pedagogy. Successful candidates will be those who have made significant contributions to early literacy education (or demonstrate the potential for such contributions) in one or more of the following areas:
  • early literacy development in culturally and linguistically diverse families and communities
  • equitable and effective approaches to literacy instruction in the preschool through primary years
  • the preparation of preschool and primary grade teachers of literacy

The successful applicant must form explicit connections between their work and Marsal School's commitments to contribute to diversity, inclusion, justice, and equity.
We seek a colleague to teach and provide leadership in our preservice programs and to develop master's and doctoral courses in early literacy education. In addition to coursework, candidates should be prepared to participate in advising doctoral students, supervising their initial teaching experiences, and fostering the development of students as scholars, researchers, and teacher educators.
The mission of the School of Education is to generate, study, and teach strategies, practices, and tools for addressing educational problems and prepare diverse groups of education practitioners, policy-makers, and researchers to develop equitable and just educational opportunities.
In pursuing our vision and mission, members of the University of Michigan School of Education community value: promoting and embodying diversity, inclusion, justice, and equity; working in local, national, and global contexts; and engaging with and learning from communities and learners.
The University of Michigan is committed to fostering and maintaining a diverse work culture that respects the rights and dignity of each individual, without regard to race, color, national origin, ancestry, religious creed, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, gender expression, height, weight, marital status, disability, medical condition, age, or veteran status. The University of Michigan is supportive of the needs of dual career couples and is an Equal Opportunity/ Affirmative Action Employer.
Qualifications
Successful candidates will have:
  • A doctorate in literacy education, or demonstrable equivalent
  • An emerging or established program of research and publication in early literacy education with a research focus on one or more of the areas identified above
  • Strong knowledge of the field of early literacy education
  • Teaching experience in early childhood, preschool, or the primary grades
  • Experience teaching early literacy methods courses for preservice teachers
  • Experience and interest in practice-based teacher education in literacy
  • Commitment to research and publication that informs teaching and learning in under-resourced schools with diverse students
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in teaching and research
  • A track record of securing (or potential to secure) grants to support research

Application Instructions
Nominations and applications will be reviewed beginning October 23. We will accept applications until November 13.
Candidates are asked to submit a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, two publications that demonstrate scholarly accomplishment, and the names of four professional references. We are also requesting three brief statements regarding teaching (750 words), research (500 words), and diversity (500 words). We prefer that materials be submitted electronically through Interfolio Interfolio Application Link 133647. Questions may be referred to: Gina Cervetti (cervetti@umich.edu).
