Job description

General Statement of Dutiesย 

This non-exemptย positionย is responsible forย performing a variety of semi-skilled and manual work involved in the maintenance, installation, and repair of theย Districtโ€™sย water distribution andย wellย waterย systems.ย 

Supervision Receivedย 

Works under theย oversightย of theย Waterย and Distribution Lead Operator and under the general supervision of theย Waterย and Distribution Supervisor.ย ย 

Primary Duties and Responsibilitiesย 

  • Conducts specialized corrective and preventative maintenance,ย inspectionย and repairย tasks on District-owned infrastructure.ย This includesย any and allย appurtenancesย related to a potable water distribution systemย (valves, pumps, hydrants,ย storage tanks etc.)ย ย Are required to flush systemย as neededย using hydrants and blow off valves toย control water quality.ย The position isย also responsibleย forย maintainingย and operatingย ground waterย wellย systemsย includingย treatmentย filtrationย plantsย and associated equipment.ย ย Ensures compliance with all Federal and State water quality regulations and permits.ย ย 

  • Working with the Water Purification Plant operatorย monitorsย water production toย maintainย adequate water levels in the storage tanks. Determines daily needs based on computer generated data,ย experienceย and daily and/or seasonal weather demands.ย 

  • Adheres to the Standard Operating Procedures andย assistsย in the development of said procedures.ย 

  • Verbally reportsย emergenciesย and major malfunctions to theย Waterย and Distribution Lead Operator and/or Waterย Production Supervisor andย initiatesย proper action per procedures.ย ย Performsย appropriate follow-upย procedures.ย ย 

  • Inspects equipment and makes recommendations to the Water Plant Supervisorย regardingย necessary repairs,ย maintenanceย and calibration.ย Collaboratesย with the Districtโ€™s maintenance department on the upkeep and replacement of equipment. Makes recommendations on the replacement schedule orย type of equipment.ย 

  • Collects bacteriological samples for new waterline connectionsย and facilities. Collects and tests chlorine samples to assess disinfectant presence and levels in response to customer concerns and other issues.ย 

  • Orders and offloads bulk chemicals for the treatment of water. Calculates chemical orders based on technicalย expertiseย and standard operating procedures. Maintains adequate chemical and supply inventories.ย 

  • Works independently and with the team to ensure all Federal, State and Local regulations are met.ย 

  • Recordsย data required for regulatory purposes.ย ย Creates daily operational reports on all changes made to the treatment plant, well system, and distribution system.ย 

  • Utilizes a variety of computer programs and databases during daily duties.ย Analyzes data and creates reports to aid in the evaluation of data and trends.ย 

  • Attendsย technical and safety training meetings, courses and seminars asย required.ย 

  • Assists with District public relations byย representingย theย Districtย in the community or responding to telephone inquiries andย concernsย from theย general public.ย 

  • Routinely performs physical cleanup and housekeeping of work areas, equipment, and buildings using standard cleaning equipment and material, and chemical cleaning procedures.ย 

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilitiesย 

  • Solid understanding of Federal and State regulations and permitting requirements.ย ย 

  • Solid understanding of equipment and procedures used in the operation ofย ground water treatment, wells, andย distribution systems.ย 

  • Solid understanding of chemistry,ย biologyย and mathematical and statistical calculationsย necessaryย to conduct,ย analyzeย and interpret the results from standard laboratory tests.ย 

  • Solid understandingย of electricity,ย hydraulicsย and pneumatics to inspect equipment and request repair and maintenance.ย 

  • Solid understanding of SCADA computer system functions.ย 

  • General knowledge and ability toย utilizeย Geographic Information System (GIS) based mapping systems, and as-built archive research systems.ย 

  • Basic computer knowledgeย including, but not limited to Microsoft Word,ย Excelย and Outlook.ย 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment and ability to apply safety principles on all job tasks.ย ย Ability toย anticipateย unsafe circumstances; act accordingly to preventย accidents, andย promptly report accidents and hazardous conditions.ย 

  • Ability to accurately compile, analyze, and interpret facts to prepare reports, to troubleshoot, to make decisions, and to solve problemsย onย process and equipment.ย 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as Safety Data Sheets, safety rules,ย operatingย and maintenanceย instructions,ย procedure manuals, blueprints, and technical documentation.ย 

  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, organize activitiesย in order toย complete tasksย in accordance withย priorities, address multipleย demandsย and meet deadlines.ย 

  • Ability to work independently with broad direction and limited supervision.ย ย Ability to work effectively withย supervisors and co-workersย and deal tactfully with the public.ย 

  • Ability toย operateย basic hand and power tools in a safe and efficient manner.ย ย  ย 

Experience / Certification Requirementsย 

  • Class D Water Treatmentย OR Class 1 Distribution Systemย certification required at time of hire.ย  Must obtain either a Class D Water Treatment or Class 1 Distribution System certification within 12 months of hire if not already certified in both Water Treatment and Distribution System.ย 

  • At least 6 months of experience in either water treatment or distribution systemย operations.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain within one year, a valid Colorado Classย Cย CDL with Hazmat and tanker endorsement and removal of airbrake restriction.ย ย Must have a Motor Vehicle Record within the Acceptable or no less than Borderline rating according to the Vehicle Policy.ย 

Working Conditions/Physical Activitiesย 

  • 40-hourย work week.ย 

  • Will be on rotatingย weekendย and emergency on-call dutyย scheduleย in addition to the regular work week.ย ย Subject to mandatory overtime on an as needed basis to work within the department and for other duties as assigned.ย 

  • May be subject to mandatory holiday and/or weekend work.ย 

  • This position isย designatedย Essential Personnel per the Emergency Response Plan during a severe winter weather warning or event.ย 

  • Performs strenuous physical labor and stands for extended periods of time.ย ย 

  • Works in aย buildingย where elevated levels of noise, noise, irritants, dust, dirt, bacteria, hazardous chemicals/air/materialsย and fumes are always present.ย ย ย 

  • Work may take place outside in all weather conditions.ย ย May be exposed to risks typically associated with working around water, chemicals,ย electricityย and otherย man-madeย and natural hazards.ย ย ย 

  • Use of a respirator may beย requiredย for some tasks and may work in confined spaces.ย 

  • Lifting and handling objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently.ย ย ย 

  • Full range of body movements including stooping, twisting, kneeling, bending, leaning, reaching, climbing (heights),ย stretchingย and working in awkward positions.ย 

  • Vision is needed for driving, reading,ย recordingย and interpreting information; speech and hearing are used to communicate with other employees over the telephone, two-wayย radioย and in person.ย

The hiring range for this position is $29.65-$46.13 per hour.ย  Actual compensation will be dependent upon experience and certification levels listed below.ย 

None/D Water Treatment/1 Distribution:ย $29.65-$34.88 per hourย 

C Water Treatment/2 Distribution:ย $32.02-$37.67 per hourย 

B or A Water Treatment/3 or 4 Distribution:ย $39.21-$46.13 per hourย
