Job description

The Senior Distribution Engineer will lead design project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments on various 2.4kV to 46kV overhead and underground utility distribution projects. The Senior Distribution Engineer will lead the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting electrical distribution plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.

  • Lead design of distribution voltage packages for both overhead and underground projects, including distribution equipment installation, feeder replacement, cable replacement, and new feeder design.

  • Review various distribution calculations, including cable pulling, voltage drop, and pole loading calculations.

  • Apply strong knowledge of NESC standards and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.

  • Participate in the development of project schedule, scope, budget, resource forecasting, and construction planning. Responsible for effective management of change orders.

  • Apply knowledge and experience to complex projects to find non-standard design solutions.

  • Oversee or perform Quality Control reviews of project deliverables.

  • Lead field inspections for overhead and underground electric facilities on public and private electric utility systems.

  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.

  • Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers, and contractors and develop new business opportunities. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.

  • Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.

  • Lead the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction by mentoring less experienced engineers and designers.

  • Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.

  • Responsible for effective communication regarding vegetation management, third-party attachments, right-of-way, and outage planning.

  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Complies with all policies and standards

  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program. and 7 years of distribution engineering experience.

  • Expert knowledge of electrical distribution power flow.

  • Strong knowledge of overhead and underground construction methods and distribution system equipment.

  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Experience in distribution design software and GIS to aid in design.

  • Expert knowledge regarding easements, right-of-way, and permitting for distribution projects.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with leading the design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead the execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Ability to travel.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License Preferred
