Job description

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Controls Specialist to join our team in the Building Automation industry. The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience with industry-leading platforms, including NIAGARA Framework, JCI Metasys, and Distech Controls, and possess deep technical expertise in managing, designing, programming, and commissioning sophisticated building automation systems (BAS). You will be responsible for overseeing the installation, integration, and optimization of control systems across a wide range of commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings.

As a Senior Controls Specialist, you will be expected to lead complex projects, mentor junior staff, troubleshoot advanced system issues, and ensure seamless integration between various building automation technologies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • System Design & Integration:
  • Lead the design, integration, and configuration of Building Automation Systems (BAS) using NIAGARA Framework, JCI Metasys, and Distech Controls.
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, and contractors to ensure the building automation systems meet project specifications and client requirements.
  • Provide expert-level guidance for configuring and troubleshooting complex control systems and networks.
  • Project Leadership:
  • Manage, coordinate, and execute large-scale automation projects from start to finish, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Oversee system commissioning and testing to ensure proper functionality and optimal performance.
  • Review and approve the work of junior controls specialists, providing mentoring and training as needed.
  • System Optimization & Troubleshooting:
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting on malfunctioning control systems, resolving issues related to hardware, software, or integration.
  • Continuously monitor and optimize system performance to improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and operational reliability.
  • Support preventive maintenance efforts by developing and executing detailed diagnostic checks and corrective actions.
  • Client Support & Communication:
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for clients, providing technical support, consulting, and training.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, ensuring satisfaction with the automation systems and services provided.
  • Provide on-site and remote troubleshooting and support during system commissioning and post-installation phases.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including system schematics, wiring diagrams, programming code, and commissioning reports.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports for both internal and client review, summarizing system performance, troubleshooting efforts, and recommendations for improvements.
  • Innovation & Technology Advancement:
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, technologies, and best practices in building automation, integrating new technologies into solutions where appropriate.
  • Identify opportunities for system enhancements and automation to improve building efficiency, sustainability, and performance.
Qualifications:
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Building Automation Systems (BAS), with expertise in NIAGARA Framework, JCI Metasys, and Distech Controls.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing and executing building automation projects in commercial or industrial environments.
  • Strong experience in system design, integration, commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization.
  • Technical Skills:
  • In-depth knowledge of building automation protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, etc.) and control strategies.
  • Expertise in the configuration and programming of NIAGARA Framework, JCI Metasys, and Distech Controls systems.
  • Proficient in working with control hardware (e.g., controllers, sensors, actuators) and networking (e.g., IP-based systems).
  • Advanced knowledge of HVAC systems, lighting control, access control, and other building systems integration.
  • Certifications:
  • Certification in relevant BAS platforms such as Tridium Niagara, JCI Metasys, or Distech Controls is preferred.
  • Additional certifications (e.g., LEED, Energy Manager) are a plus.
  • Problem Solving & Analytical Skills:
  • Excellent troubleshooting, diagnostic, and analytical skills, with the ability to quickly identify and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to identifying opportunities for system optimization.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical clients.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with project teams, clients, and vendors.
  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field is preferred.
Working Conditions:
