What is a dispensary team lead?

Dispensary Team Leads are supervisory staff members in cannabis dispensaries who oversee daily operations and staff on the sales floor. They ensure compliance with state and local cannabis regulations, provide customer service, and support training and performance management for dispensary employees. Team Leads act as a bridge between upper management and frontline staff, helping to resolve issues quickly and maintain a positive work environment. They are also responsible for inventory control, addressing customer concerns, and ensuring the dispensary runs smoothly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dispensary team lead?

To thrive as a Dispensary Team Lead, you need experience in retail management, a solid understanding of cannabis products and compliance regulations, and often a high school diploma or higher. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and state-mandated tracking systems like METRC is typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you motivate staff and deliver excellent customer service. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring regulatory compliance, efficient operations, and a positive customer experience.

How does a dispensary team lead typically support staff development and address performance challenges within the team?

A Dispensary Team Lead plays a key role in supporting staff development by providing ongoing training, clear communication of expectations, and regular feedback. They often conduct one-on-one check-ins to understand team members’ strengths and areas for improvement, and create action plans to help staff meet performance goals. Addressing challenges may involve mediating conflicts, coaching underperforming employees, and fostering a collaborative work environment. This leadership approach helps maintain compliance, high customer service standards, and a positive team culture.
