The Police Dispatcher Dispatches patrol officers in response to calls and emergencies. Advises, screens and refers callers to appropriate resources. Communicates as a University of New Haven ambassador for many issues.

You will:

  • Dispatches patrol officers in response to calls and emergencies.
  • Communicates with contracted security personnel when necessary.
  • Relays instructions, orders and information requiring knowledge of departmental policies, practices, procedures and reporting relationships.
  • Maintains pertinent logs lost and found, keys, and other logging systems
  • Receives, records and services all incoming calls from officers, staff, students, and the public calling for police assistance or general information.
  • Monitor and respond to fire and security alarm systems and emergency calls.
  • Provides information to faculty, staff, students, administrative staff, contracted security, and the public.
  • Use computer-aided dispatching equipment to monitor, track and retrieve data.
  • Knowledge of numerous varied software platforms and ability to use them effectively.
  • Establishes solid working relationships with local emergency services - AMR, West Haven Fire and Police as well as Orange Fire and Police resources.
  • Performs clerical functions incidental to office activities.
  • Assist the Deputy Chief in background checks for students.
  • Fields calls and inquiries regarding transportation schedules, as well as being responsive to shuttle and van communications and interfacing information in tracking software.
  • Report and generate work orders for facilities needs across campus.
  • Monitors contracted securitys usage and response to University of New Haven golf carts for transportation of students.
  • Effectively monitor security cameras and download video for law enforcement and insurance purposes.
  • Effective use of the ZeroEyes gun detection system

Secondary Duties

  • Performs related duties as assigned

You need:

  • High School Diploma
  • Prior experience in public safety dispatch and computer-aided dispatch systems is preferred.
  • State Certification as an Emergency Telecommunications Operator is preferred.
  • A year of experience working as a dispatcher, preferably at an institution of higher learning is preferred
  • Ability to communicate in a professional, clear, calm and concise manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal with a diverse employee and student population
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive and private information.
  • Working Knowledge of Microsoft Office

Other position Requirements

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including working overtime hours, weekends, University observed holidays, and University closures for emergency or inclement weather.
