Job description

The Supervisor, Dispatch plays a mission-critical role in ensuring the precision, reliability, and speed that define our long-haul LTL network. As customer expectations rise and freight volumes scale, this role anchors the daily operational rhythm that keeps our metro-to-metro model running with discipline and consistency.
You will manage the flow of pickups, appointments, and driver coordination across a complex, time-sensitive environment. Success means every load is planned intelligently, every customer is served on time, and every driver has the information and support needed to execute safely and efficiently. This role exists to protect service integrity, strengthen operational performance, and elevate the customer experience across the network. What you'll do
1. Lead daily dispatch operations
  • Oversee terminal load plans to ensure efficient routing and optimal asset utilization
  • Prioritize and assign pickups to maximize service performance and customer satisfaction
  • Ensure all scheduled pickups are completed, and exceptions are escalated quickly
  • Manage pickup and delivery appointments with accuracy and urgency
  • Maintain real-time visibility into freight movement and driver status
2. Coordinate driver and contractor performance
  • Provide timely guidance, support, and safety information to Independent Contractors
  • Issue driver advances for breakdowns and unloading needs in accordance with policy
  • Communicate delays, incidents, and breakdowns to origin and destination terminals
  • Partner with drivers and freight handlers to resolve operational challenges
  • Reinforce company standards through consistent coaching and leadership
3. Strengthen systems, tracking, and compliance
  • Administer dispatch and tracking systems to ensure accurate, real-time data
  • Maintain documentation, reports, and communication logs with precision
  • Apply company policies consistently and escalate issues appropriately
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across dispatch workflows
  • Ensure compliance with safety, regulatory, and operational requirements
4. Elevate customer experience
  • Answer inbound pickup calls and provide clear, timely information
  • Resolve customer issues with professionalism and ownership
  • Coordinate with terminals, contractors, and corporate teams to ensure service reliability
  • Protect customer commitments through proactive problem-solving
  • Represent the company with confidence and operational expertise
5. Lead with accountability and operational discipline
  • Provide leadership through example, knowledge-sharing, and consistent follow-through
  • Delegate tasks effectively while maintaining high standards of execution
  • Support training and development of dispatch personnel
  • Drive a culture of accuracy, responsiveness, and operational excellence
  • Contribute to a high-performance environment aligned with business goals

What you bring
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 1-2+ years of dispatch, transportation, logistics, or related operational experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedural documentation
  • Experience preparing reports, correspondence, and operational documentation
  • Ability to communicate effectively with terminals, contractors, law enforcement, and customers
  • Strong analytical skills, including ability to calculate percentages, proportions, and basic geometry
  • Proven ability to solve practical problems in dynamic, non-standardized environments
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and delegate assignments in a fast-moving operation
  • Proficiency with email, databases, spreadsheets, and general PC applications
  • Preferred: AS/400 experience
  • Preferred: Experience supervising personnel, training, and performance management
  • Average typing, filing, and ten-key skills

How you operate
  • You think in systems, not tasks
  • You stay calm, clear, and decisive under pressure
  • You challenge assumptions constructively and seek better ways to operate
  • You own outcomes, not activity
  • You move quickly without sacrificing accuracy
  • You communicate with clarity, confidence, and purpose
  • You anticipate issues before they become problems
  • You lead with accountability and follow-through
  • You build trust through consistency and operational discipline
Compensation & Setup
  • $63,000-$68,000 base salary
  • Onsite - Philadelphia, PA
  • Full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and PTO

About Roadrunner
Roadrunner is for ambitious, smart people who excel at execution over talking about it, and who would rather invent the next standard in freight than accept the status quo.
We are looking for the Best of the Best. Action driven leaders who want to be part of real change and help design the future of LTL in the U.S. This is a place where high performers can grow, influence outcomes, and make an impact while working directly with executives and smart people from across industries.
We bring a winner mindset. We take ownership, raise the bar, and measure ourselves by results. We Run Safe. We Run Smart. We Run Together. These principles create an environment of high standards, clear ownership, and direct collaboration. We trust data over intuition, move with urgency, and hold each other accountable because winning requires it.
Roadrunner exists to prove that LTL can be better than the industry has settled for. To be the best means we need to think bigger, look outside the box, and question every assumption: too many handoffs, limited visibility, and the quiet belief that "this is just how it works." We rejected that story. We built a proprietary Smart Network™ for direct, long haul, metro to metro service that delivers fewer touches, faster transit, real time visibility, and genuine accountability. We are the most tech forward company in LTL, and we are not finished widening the gap.
The foundation is already strong. Recognized as one of Built In Chicago's Best Large Places to Work. Earning top marks for improvement, quality, and service. The real opportunity is still ahead: helping invent what comes next.
If you want to be evaluated among the Best of the Best and help set the new standard in LTL, we should talk.
